| Quote ="Serge A. Storms"Matt,
If we have 10 teams and we play home and away that gives each team 9 home games - gives Sky 6 weeks less coverage?
The numbers simply don't add up - season ticket prices would have to fall by 25% to justify the reduced number of games?
Where is the revenue coming from?'"
David
I would rather have a 12 team competition actually, which gives a minimum of 11 home games. How the game sets itself up has nothing to do with SKY. They don't call the tune. They are the major broadcast partner and no more. It's ridiculous at the moment where we have the season starting at the end of January and playing through February. Summer rugby was meant to eliminate all of this so the players could play in better conditions. It would, as had been mentioned also leave time for representative games to be played and not have the ridiculous situation of club games taking part at the same time as the international.
I admit any reduction in games would not benefit the "smaller" clubs in the competition as they "big" clubs make more of their money through their corporate sales rather than joe public on the terraces.
Ticket prices are going to rise next season now that the VAT rise has been announced. But game day prices have doubled in the last 10 years. Clubs can't rely on just game day income anymore they have to expand and find new revenue streams to keep them going.
I'll admit, I'm a Club > Country man. But at the end of the day we harm our prospects in the international "Autumn Tournament" by making the players play too many games. Some England players are going into this having played around 35 games in some cases. You could get some blokes in the opposition who have only played 24 all year and it's a big difference. It's very difficult for England players at time in these competitions as they have simply played too many games through the year and they have nothing left in the tank for the internationals.
Quality, not quantity for me and I'd rather see 22 great regular season games than some of the crap that has been turfed up at times this season.

| Quote ="Nozzy"Don't think Barrow fans would be very impressed with that set up. Switch Sheffield for Barrow and I would be quite happy with that structure. But surely 9 home games a year would be nowhere near enough to to fund a full time club? Especially in the '2nd' super league as the away support wouldn't be great from lots of teams.
On the other hand maybe a club like Harlequins could improve crowds as they would be a 'big' club in SL2 rather than at the bottom of SL1.
Can't see it happening though really as I dont think the 2nd tier would be viable as a full time league.'"
I was meant to include Barrow. I was doing it from memory.

| Quote ="Noel Cleal"So that is Michael Shenton, Richard Owen, Westerman, Rob Purdham and LMS. The rest go go back to the NSW cup/Championship If you believe the rumours 4 of them are going to top 5 clubs next year anyway.
I don't think cutting these teams is fair especially when [uHull KR are asking for quota exceptions[/u and the named 4 have actually being trying to develop their own talent. It would be rewarding short sightedness.'"
Players currently at Hull KR are attempting to take advantage of an RFL rule. I expect there are others at other clubs too. These players, with their exemptions, are free to play for whosoever they wish.
The dispensation, in these instances, would be to the players, not the clubs.
HKR will have the same 5-12-8 squad restrictions as most other clubs next year.
Quote ="Noel Cleal"We need to reduce the number of games not the number of teams.'"
From a sport POV I'd go for:
16 teams divided into two pools of 8. Play your own conference (eg 'East' or 'West') H and A, and those in the other H or A (alternating each year). 22 games competing for your Conference League, then a play-off system for the Championship. Two seperate but linked competitions, with the Championship Grand final being the most prestigious, but winning the conference league more than just a lengthy prelude with a hub cap attached.
It'd mean splitting the (possibly smaller due to fewer fixtures) sky money between more teams, and less games to generate gate and match day revenue.
Our chairman wants fewer teams and more games. Our coach wants fewer games. The current balance isn't too bad - you'll never please everyone.

| Haha thanks! I know the play offs are money spinners for clubs and the RFL being tickets only but we need to reward the consistence and improve the international scene drastically. Look at cricket. Poor club attendances but get so much coverage at international level. On a side matter the RFL needs to pull their finger out and annouce the strucuture of WC 2013, stadia then get the tickets out soon thus advertising it none stop ala Wigan do with their "the big one" and "st georges day game"

I think Barrow would HAVE to be included in the 2nd tier. Our stadium is no worse than Cas, Wakey, Salford and Fev. Plus, we actually won the league and GF in 2009 (something the RFL don't seem to care about) and we knocked Cas out of the Cup.
Out of curiosity, why are Sheffield in that list ??

I said on the last page that I forgot to inlcude Barrow I was doing it by memory.
They are on of the first on the list after the super league clubs.
Sheffield are playing in a big, quality stadium in a big city, they used to be in super league, they have been getting some decent crowds. Huge potential.

| we do need fewer teams in the top division, more teams overall
the increase to a fourteen team league was a mistake, there are 14+ viable clubs who can play in the division, what there are not are 14 squads of European players with sufficient quality, moving to franchises would have been more problematic if they had kept the division at 12 beecasue they would be cutting off more viable clubs for three years or more from one of the two biggest sources of income and reducing the other
it also maintained the high numbers of fixtures which is bad for the players but better for the clubs
the RFL needs to look towards "super league 2" a division of clubs that could be in superleague but are not and split the income from television accordingly, a return to smei automatic P+R would be great too

| Quote ="Odemwingie"I agree, clubs should only be promoted when they are good enough for the league IMO. This would make the league below alot stronger and those clubs would have alot more urgency to better themselves, up untill now we just havn't seen that.
Wigan
Leeds
Saints
Wire
Hull FC
Bradford
Hull KR
Catalans
Hudds
Crusaders
The other 4 can go down the the next league which would only include teams who are good enough to apply for super league.
This would create genuine competition in the league below and more games in super league would be far far better.
Castleford
Wakefield
Salford
Harlequins
Leigh
Widnes
Halifax
Featherstone
Sheffield
Toulouse
This creates two leagues stronger than we have now.
The teams from the league below this would then have to better themselves to get into the 2nd league so they could potentially apply for super league.'"
I notice that no one put forward these ideas last year when Bradford and Hull were near the bottom
Just because Warrington have some mug throwing money at them all of sudden doesnt mean that they should get all smug. It was only a couple of years ago that Warrington were a mid table team at best!

| If this had been done last season and we'd got rid of the last four it would have mean't Wire being 10th were bottom club.
At Smith previous bottom club Huddersfield, which he relegated, he kept quiet about his proposal then.

| I don't think it's about the number of teams rather about the number of games. Therefore i'd suggest the league is split into two. An Eastern & Western conference containing 8 teams in each.
East
Bradford
Castleford
Harlequins
Huddersfield
Hull FC
Hull KR
Leeds
Wakefield
West
Catalans
Crusaders
Salford
St Helens
Warrington
Widnes
Wigan
Another (Leigh/Barrow/etc)
Team play those in their conference twice and those in the other conference once rotating H & A each season. It would reduce the games from 27 to 22 (23 if you include Murrayfield). Which would allow geniune space for mid season internationals or even East v West. It should help reduce travelling costs and could even increase crowds as the majority of games within the conference are either derbies or will hugely determine if a side makes the play-offs. Top 3/4 from each conference qualify for Play-Offs.

| For me, surely we need to increase games not reduce them? If we increase them there's more likely to be more revenues made from individual games, which in turn is likely to stimulate higher incomes and revenues for seasons, which in turn is going to increase players' pay packets and incomes, which will in turn make the game more attractive to those with aspirations to be sports stars, which in turns will stimulate more players in the game and bigger squads and lighten the load on squads.
Or am I clutching at straws?

| I wonder how the NRL manage to have a 16 club league and 3 SoO games?
They must be super men or something. Or maybe the NRL and SoO just aren’t as tough and competitive as Super League?
I mean, we can see how poor they are internationally…

| So what we are saying is let's restructure the whole game for the benefit of about two dozen players!
What happened to the days of holding down a day job, playing league games and then the Challenge Cup, JP Trophy, Yorks & Lancs Cup and Premiership etc?
WE DO NOT PLAY ENOUGH GAMES TO SUSTAIN THE CLUBS WE HAVE!
Where is the money supposed to come from?

| No, this would benefit all players. Less games could lead to fewer injuries and players being able to play on for longer.
We play too many games at the moment. That is without question. 30+ club games a year is not the way forward at all.

How do the Aussies cope with 26 rounds?
Then:
Qualifying Finals
Semi Finals
And Grand Final?
The two top teams will play 29 – 30 games.
Then there’s the SoO games for the very best players and international games.
If they can do it, why can’t we?

There are two bye weeks for each club. They only play 24 league games in total. So for a top 2 club player appearing in every game they are looking at 27 max.

For Origin the selected players don't play for their clubs the weekend before.
They have one mid-season international. played in May before Origin starts and most players tend to back up at the weekend as well.
Still less games than over here

| Historically we basically have:
Tier 1
St's
Leeds
Tier 2
HFC
Warrington
Bradford
Wigan
Tier 3
HKR
Hudds
Wakey
Cats
Tier4
Crus
Quins
Salford
Whilst teams may move up or down one tier, at the moment there still isn't the spread of talent for teams to jump/drop 2 or 3 tiers each season like in the NRL. A lot comes down to financial capacity of clubs. When all clubs can afford the full salary cap and provide the coaching and training facilities equally we may see a more equal spread of talent and more intensity week in and week out.
