| For someone who loves TV audience figures so much I suggest you take a look at teh NRL GF viewing figures. Then consider what they would have looked liek against teh AFL's WITHOUT the 900,000 Victorian viewers that tuned in to watch the Storm!
Losing a Melbourne team would be the biggest step backwards for RL in this country since they culled the Rams, Reds and Crushers and retereated back to the Eastern seaboard confines of the last century.

If a city the size of Melbourne cannot support one RL side it says much about RL being Australia's number 1 sport.
Dally wants a return to ARL days with a huge majority of Sydney sides in the comp - it is the only way Sydney sides have a chance of actually winning it.

| no but you seem to so where does that leave your argument? Come on tell me how would the GF have faired with no Melbourne team? How would you have spun the GF viewing getting hammered without the Vic viewers? If you can't see the value of a Melbourne team to the NRL, well specsavers should be your next stop!

sydney RL clubs have virtual casino, some with assets of $300 million behind them backing them up

What? Sydney clubs like Panthers who are crying that they will have to cut back on support for senior and junior League because of reduced revenue due to the new smoking laws and pokie taxes? Sydney clubs like Parra who posted a massive loss this year - not the football club, the Leagues club which pays for football operations?
Storm don't [ilose money[/i. That's a misconception.
Storm spend roughly $21million a year (a large portion of it on junior development). They make approx $15M a year from external sources (tickets, sponsorship, jersey sales and so on) and the remainder comes from News Ltd, their owner - just as Russell Crowe, Delmege etc tip into [itheir[/i teams. If News reduced their contribution, Storm would have to curb expenditure and (unfortunately) that would have to start with Victorian juniors. If they [ilost[/i money, they would be in debt.
Anyway, most Sydney clubs would wet themselves at the thought of having a $15M revenue stream.

The sad thing is you really believe that - pity you cannot back it up with facts-£150m doesn't seem much compared to a group with a tv deal alone that dwarfs that never mind the intangibles - if you understand what that means

| There you go again with your AFL fixation!
Reality is the Penrtih Panthers NRL club does not have a sustainable income based on RL operations alone. They are no different to the Storm or 90% of other NRL teams in that respect. It's good they have a massive pokie machine chain sucking dole cheques out of the under classes of the Western Suburbs. if they had to rely on a fan base they'd be long gone.
Personally I'd rather my sports club be making $millions of profit than losing millions and relying on handouts, wherever they come from.

Assets, schmassets. Yes they have massive infrastructure (all of which costs to maintain). However, if you were to look at the balance sheets for the last few years you would find after tax profit has dropped significantly. Some of the clubs under the Panthers umbrella (I think Wentworthville for example) made losses last year. Parramatta Leagues has some fairly decent assets, yet they made a loss last year too - something like $6 million IIRC.
Read the news and you will see both these clubs - infact most of the licenced clubs in NSW - are crying poor. While you're at it, have a read of many clubs - Wests and Parra in particular - expressing their concerns about how the loss of revenue will impact the future viability oftheir Rugby League clubs. Pokies are no longer the golden future of Rugby League. (And a damn good thing too as far as I'm concerned. There are way too many pensioners and low income earners gambling away their mortgage payments or the food off their family's tables)
Quote the storm do lose money. stop talking nonsense.'"
No, they don't. Their revenue, including funds provided by their owner, meet their expenditure.
A [iloss [/iis what Parramatta have, when revenue raised from all sources (including their Leagues club) does not meet their expenditure.

what happens then?
the storm are currently not financially viable. we all hope they become so.
NRL people have said if the storm arent viable within 5 years they will be killed off.
sydney clubs are lucky to have backers or leagues clubs.
if the storm cant cut their losses theyll need to find some sugar daddies

Assets don't mean much these days Dally. It's not the case of a Leagues Club selling assets to help a footy team. Those days, if they were ever here, are long gone.
West Tigers are struggling and that's with the backing of 3 Leagues Clubs.

Have done, personally i don't like them apart from the cheap beer and food. found it quite depressing watching heaps of people, who looked like they couldn't afford to, feeding coins or $'s into flashing machines hour after hour. Not fond of pollies but thankfully the WA ones have had enough sense to keep them out of our State.
Back on topic, so where are the links and how does, lets say, Cronullas assetts help when they owe more than $11million ( www.theage.com.au/rugby-league/l ... -iykk.html) and are losing money hand over fist, or Parramattas where they lost millions over the last two years and have already begun cutting the NRL grant ( www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,865 ... 14,00.html). the writings on thE wall, Crowe and PHaC can see it and hopefully so can other NRL CEO's.

the loss was due to a one off property write down
last year Parra LC paid $3 - $4 million to the football club plus paid a massive salary to fitzgeralf and perks
