| Quote ="dally messenger"success is having a viable SL club.
having weak NL1 and 2 clubs isnt very succesful to me, especially after more than 50 years.
oh and to help you more on the history thing, liverpool city played at Knotty Ash. the main grand stand was donated from Knowsley Rd, the home of St Helens RLFC.'"
So no club that isnt in sl is a success so if a team spread rl to new areas, produces local talent and has won trophies they are a success just because there not in sl? this parochial attitude explains why rl in australia is only strong enough to support one national tier.
And what has liverpool got to do with anything? or are have you just picked up a book to pull some random facts abouts english rl to try to give the false impression you have even a basic knowledge of rl in this country?

So if you've heard of all these expansion clubs why did you yourself say there had only been 5? doesnt sound like the actions of someone very bright.......

little tip : pokie machine revenues came in the 60s/70s.
RL was established as the dominant sport in nsw by 1909, which is well before the pokies came in.
queensland had zero pokie revenues and still RL was number 1.

And the competition back in 1909 was what ?
Yes the pokie revenue came in th 60's , how much expansion did it finance ?

Did you read my post?
I said the top clubs average over this, Leeds is one of them.
You know nothing about RL in this country if you think Leeds could average 28,000. They are currently the most succesful team over a few years for quite some time and they don't fill their current stadium.
I don't think it should stay a minority sport, I love RL. It's just the way it is in this country.

Spot on.
Aus RL has no where near as much competition as RL in the UK does.
We have one of the biggest domestic sporting competitions in the world to compete with. The premier league is probably second to the NFL. RU is far superior in so many ways especially at international level. Cricket is massive at international level in this country. When Wimbledon comes around, everyone in the country could not care less about RL. The 3rd tier of English football is probably bigger than super league itself.
How does RL have a chance to expand? We can try and will continue to do so.... RL will never die in this country, but for people who want it to be a worldwide game or a nationwide game for the UK may as well give up now, although there are many things we can do.
Main areas to adress.
PNG
NZ
Cumbria
Toulouse
Paris
Wales
Scotland
Ireland
London
Tonga
Samoa
Some of the ones mentioned are places that love RL and they have no where near reached their potential.
From Paris downwards, there is a real chance to put RL on the map in those places as they are backgrounds and small success stories that give us hope.
Thats what I think of expansion. I am not interested in putting teams in Birmingham or Newcastle or anything like that, it will just fail. But imagine we could get an NRL team in PNG.... they love RL and it would be the biggest success in RL history. That would be a great step towards sorting the international game out.

RL dominance in australia didnt come about from poker machine revenue
for anyone to argue that is ignorant.
but as people can ignore the facts
RL was dominant in NSW around 50 years before poker machines were introduced
RL become dominant in queensland without poker machines being introduced
damn those pesky facts

take out the expansion clubs from NL1 and NL2, widnes because they can offer something back to RL, and its every other club in there really
lets play guess the failed club -
new ground, no significant increase in crowds, and despite supposedly being a chance at SL manage to get relegated, until the RFL change the rules

Yes so what was the competition to RL in Australia in 1909 ? , that was the question
The other question was the introduction of the ' Pokie ' machines produced massive revenue for RL in Australia , what expansion did this produce ?
Answer the question asked , if you can

Increase in crowds from when , many of the clubs have had very good crowds in their past , just as many clubs in both the UK and Australia have had very bad crowds in their past

| That Gallop fella seems to understand the problem...
"To be frank, I think some codes are getting in a race to put dots on a map without carefully considering the impact on the remaining clubs, or their current clubs,'' Gallop said.
''I think rugby league has been down that road and made those mistakes, and I wouldn't like to see it make those mistakes again.
''There is nothing worse than to add teams to your competition and have them fall over. It's not only bad for the particular area, it has a ripple effect across the whole game and the confidence that people have in the game and the confidence that players have to play your game.''
Any comments on this Dally? It sounds quite similar to the concerns many on here have been voicing.

With the best will in the world, when an RL adminstrator says that something is a good idea, everyone should immediately start looking to do the opposite.
Seriously though, everything that Gallop currently says has to be viewed through the prism of what's currently going on in Australia with an aggressive AFL seeking to expand into Qld and NSW. He's hardly going to say "Yes, we're bricking it because a cashed up AFL has some bizarre hold on the imagination of many of our countrymen with their strange aerial ping-pong and is importing their odd eighties-style muscle vests into our backyard, while we can only barely afford to keep the best team in the comp going in Melbourne." In April this year, Gallop was quoted as supporting a third Queensland team in the Ipswich area with a fourth to come further down the line. He's a pro, making whatever noises he sees fit given the stories on the back pages at the time.
I think it's reaching a bit to suggest that anything he says now on the subject of how he squares up to AFL in the Aussie TV rights wars is relevant to anything we do to try to grow the game in Europe.

I will bow to your obvious better knowledge of our antipodean friends , however when we have had the sports governing body ' SKY ' supporting an expansion team for several years in the sports premier , best financed competition , and now they are letting that club attempt to support itself , but there is not a queu of investors waiting to support it , you have to consider the wisdom of what we are trying to achieve
