Why would a coach of Timothy Sheen's stature agree to become coach of a team that has only part time players and little prospect of rejoining Super League in the foreseeable future?

I suspect that the reason is that he needs a job, a well paying job, and that no other financially comparable offers were in sight.

What a pity that the Catalans Dragons didn't make a move for him.

Next you will be writing that Wayne Bennett is "yesterday's man," because he could not win a premiership in his first year at South Sydney. Everybody knows that the loss of Gregory Inglis, and the serious injury to Samuel Burgess's shoulder, doomed South Sydney's chances of success in 2019, regardless of who the coach was.

The same applies to Timothy Sheen's unhappy performances as a coach of English clubs. He wasn't given a strong enough roster of players, either at Salford or Hull Kingston Rovers, and that is why he was not successful with those clubs.

Timothy Sheens is a coach of great distinction. When given a strong roster of players, as he had at Canberra Raiders and Wests Tigers, he has been very successful

Sheens has a superb record in Australia but, in the UK, he's been less than average.
Almost got Salford relegated but, then backed the wrong horse and went down with KR instead.
Salford have done rather better with their young English Coach, Ian Watson.

I think it's a good appointment for both parties. Tim Sheens can help guide a famous old club to the play-offs, and with Widnes they have some cracking young players, that will only benefit from his knowledge & experience.

Sheens is an old man now, I get he might love the game but 100% should be taking a back seat now and perhaps head home to Sydney and look to offer his knowledge and experience at a lower league side. Having said that I wish him well at Widnes...

All of his (Sheens) success has come in Australia.
Mourinho was successful in 4 countries, until his luck ran out.

I was looking at it more like Sheens has become, like Mourinho, bit of a dinosaur.

No idea why I am rising for the bait but I would suggest Timothy Sheens is better known Worldwide as 'Tim'.

Sheens seems outdated to me, very much like Brian Smith - A very knowledgeable coach with plenty of experience that has lost the ability to adapt against well coached teams. It happens in every walk of life, no sign of disrespect - Just the truth.

Timothy Sheens has won four Grand Finals, with two different teams. Three Grand Finals with the Canberra Raiders (1989, 1990, 1994) and one Grand Final with the Wests Tigers (2005).

Brian Smith has won no Grand Finals, though he has been runner up in three I believe, with three different teams --- St George-Illawarra Dragons, Parramatta Eels, and Sydney Roosters.

"Tim" is his familiar name. But he is in fact a Timothy.

Wests Tigers has no other familiar name.
