| Quote ="SmokeyTA"That isnt the case at all. Just being the best of however many teams doesnt mean you should be in the elite league, thats the reason we have an elite league.
If Cas's best aim is to simply offer a career to the local juniors and nobody below can offer more, we would be better cutting the size of SL.
And you dont need a sugar daddy to buy the best players or pay the full SC, both Leeds and Hull do it whilst making a profit. You could argue there are reasons Leeds and Hull can do this and Castleford cant, but they are simply reasons that SL may not be the right place for Cas.
The way to success is to develop local talent, but how many are you losing because you cant afford to keep them? If all the aim of Cas is to bring in local talent train them until 20/21/22 then let them go to the bigger clubs, they can do that in the championships.
If you are in SL, more is demanded of you.'"
No thats not the best that cas are aiming for, cas are aiming to grow as a club and doing so. If crusaders were doing as well as castleford in youth development and commercial development you would be shouting it from the roof tops. Success doesnt happen overnight it takes time to build and alot of hard work, that is what cas are aiming for sustainable growth and improvment, which is what the rfl has asked us to do.
Leeds and hull turn a profit, but there was a time they didnt and it took investment from big money men to make them turn a profit, if you have enough money you can make a club profitable, by getting better players in and spending more on marketing, which leads to more fans and more sponsorship.
Of course its not the aim of cas to develop players to see them picked off, that would be absurd, not every club can keep its players for ever. Every club in sl loses home grown players they would prefer to keep. Cas made the decision to concentrate on youth development in 2004, it has taken time for players to come through, some have stayed, some have left and more talented youngsters are coming through all the time. In the last 3 seasons we have lost boyle, shenton and westerman, huby and owen have stayed and holmes, arundel, thompson, milner, davies and walker have come through, with orr returning.

I enjoy watching castleford tigers rlfc, and spend alot of money doing so, i wouldnt spend my money to watch say huddersfield as there not my team, any merged club would not be my team either, so would be as attractive to me as supporting huddersfield. But you want a team for the wakefield district, any team representing wakefield, represents wakefield not castleford, despite the administrative borders of the council no one from the 5 towns feels any affinity towards wakefield, this is what you struggle to grasp and the reason any merger would be a disaster. The people of castleford feel the same way about supporting a wakefield team as wigan fans feel about supporting a st helens team and bradford fans feel about supporting a leeds team.
I wouldnt give up on rugby, if cas didnt exist i would support lock lane, as the being able to support a club i identify with is far more important than the league they play in.
If you really feel that the people of castleford would ever support a wakefield team its pointless trying to explain it to you as you lack even the most basic understanding of the social and sporting attitudes of the area.

What you seem to be confusing is having a team representing Wakefield and a team for the whole of Wakefield. Like it or not Wakefield is the place Castleford is in, Castleford attract people from Wakefield, you might wish to get bogged down in petty parochialism but it really isnt relevant. You dont need to identify with the city of Wakefield to identify with a team which represents the whole of Wakefield.

| Quote ="SmokeyTA" bogged down in petty parochialism quote
Petty parochialism to an obvious intellect such as yourself
, but to most fans it's called pride in your local team and its the rivalry between teams such as Wakey and Cas that gives RL that bit of extra spice. If I wanted to watch bland franchised pap with no soul I'd go and watch F1 or Ice Hockey. If Wakey were to be phagocytosed by a Wakefield District Uber Team - I'd go and watch Crigglestone All Blacks or Eastmoor Dragons.

| Would you really?
Why dont you do that now? if you do enjoy watching amateur RL why dont you do it now? If you enjoy it, why is it dependent on the phagocytosis (weird use of the word tbh) of WTW for you to do it?

| Maybe he does indeed, and occasionally Sandal RU (I know, but they do play an attacking game!), and Pledwick Cricket Club, occasionally Hall Green FC. Many years ago (30 odd) I used to watch Leeds Utd, but I became severely disillusioned when footy got commercialised and the players became somehow remote from the fans and the club became more interested in the contents of the fans wallets than their loyal support.
Thats what I dont want to happen to RL - for it to be engulfed and destroyed by an unthinking and uncaring monster (hence the use of the word phagocytosis - dramatic I know, but I dont know that many big words and I like to use them when I can!)

| I go to EVERY Trinity home game, and just the occasional game for the other clubs mentioned - if I were single and not weighed down by a ball-and-chain it would be many more, AND away games for Trin. If Trinity were no longer, I would have lots more time on my hands....
I note that as well as an intellectual you are a pedant! I suppose I could work out a formula to demonstrate that the time available for watching sport is finite and limited to how much in the wifes good books I am (not much, usually) and that this is divisible by the number of matches I wish to attend for the various clubs divided by the amount of cash I have multiplied by the ratio of jobs outstanding at home/jobs done which may prove my hypothesis, but I strongly suspect you would refute this proof (proof in the mathematical sense rather than the legal).

| you think it would dispute that there is a finite amount of RL you can possibly watch? On the basis i dispute you would simply give up on the game at a pro level because your team changed its name?

| The concept that you cannot seem to grasp is that my team would not simply change its name!! It would be 'incorporated' into a larger concern, and in doing so would lose its individuality and its identity. The 'new' team might be more succesful, but it wouldn't be 'my' team. If success were the only yard-stick for support I'd be a Rhino or some other teams fan. I don't know who you follow, but would you switch allegiance on the basis of your team success?

| i wouldnt on the basis of its success, however if my club was struggling and merged to be part of another club which was stronger, yes i would go watch them.
I enjoy watching RL, i enjoy it more at Pro level, I would still enjoy it if my team was called Leeds Rhinos, or the West Yorkshire terriers or something else.

So say, if Leeds got merged but then someone decided - like us, that they couldn't support the newly merged team and decided to create another side at a lower-league level called Leeds Rhinos - which would you support?
Because I can GUARANTEE that is what would happen. If Cas and Wakey merged, fans would work together to create a newly born club called Castleford Tigers/Wakefield Trinity. and go watch them.

Yes the RFL would let 2 new Championship 1 teams in.
It doesn't have to be Tigers & Wildcats, you can't stop a team being called Castleford RLFC & Wakefield Trinity.

Yes you can, Castleford RLFC was the name of the tigers before they were called the tigers, unless they were idiots they will have kept the rights to that name. Similarly with Trinity.
And why do you suppose the RFL would let 2 new clubs in the Championships whose sole reason for existence was to take away from one of their member clubs?
