| Quote ="Gaslight"Wakefield fans wouldn't go watch a team playing in Glasshoughton, Cas could market the current team anywhere they want, you don't need a merger to do that.
The fans don't want it, the boards don't want it, only you want it and you're a blinkered Leeds fan who seemingly knows nothing at all about why people get associated with sports teams, I'm going to assume you didn't watch RL before LUFC got relegated and you jumped on board the band wagon like half the folks who go to the Rhinos games now.
'"
But apparently Quote ="Gaslight"
People get associated with teams through geographic proximity to clubs mainly - why are Cas fans Cas fans? because they're in the main, from Castleford, why are Wakey fans Wakey fans? because on the whole they're from the city of Wakefield.
Why would new fans get involved in a team with no geographical association? they wouldn't, '"
So Cas cant attract these fans can they.

Yes, because if you didn't miss words out that change the entire context of a sentence to suit your inane ramblings, you'd see the MAIN of the fans, i.e. the core support come from the town - however just look at the locations from where fans come from to watch Cas you'll see:
Castleford, Pontefract, Featherstone, Wakefield, Normanton, Knottingly, Doncaster, Leeds, Hull, London, some fans came up from BRISTOL last year after seeing a Cas game on TV.
So yeah, a merger isn't needed, stop banging on about it we aren't interested.

So you acknowledge that there will be drop off in support in the initial period after a merger, that a new club won't necessarily acquire all the fans of both the old clubs?
So once these fans disaffected by the merger walk away, where are their replacements going to come from given you've already acknowledged in response to Gaslight that Cas can't attract new fans from the surrounding area at the moment?

A drop off from what level? I certainly think a merged club would immediately get attendances at least comparable with the clubs individually, likely not cumulatively.
Some would come back. And as Cas will struggle to attract fans from the rest of the district as they dont represent the rest of the district, a merged team which did represent the district wouldnt have the same issue.

the quote in full
Quote ="Gaslight"
People get associated with teams through geographic proximity to clubs mainly - why are Cas fans Cas fans? because they're in the main, from Castleford, why are Wakey fans Wakey fans? because on the whole they're from the city of Wakefield.
Both clubs have far too much history to throw together into some merger, that as a Leeds fan you just don't get because you're too biassed and blinkered to see what you're even writing.
Put it this way, WHY would long term fans of both teams support a merger when what would likely happen is the "original" clubs will just be formed again in a lower league - they will be more popular because of HISTORY and ASSOCIATION.
Why would new fans get involved in a team with no geographical association? they wouldn't, with a team name that's ambiguous people would have no reason to be attached to a team at all, playing in SL is not the be all and end all, you don't realise this.
'"
Where do you change the context?
And you are simply now proving my point for me, if people from these towns, with no affiliation to Cas will come watch Cas, why wont they come watch a merged side? Why does someone from Bristol or Doncaster care whether the team represents Cas or the whole WMDC.
Why on earth would someone from Wakefield stop attending Cas games because changed from representing Cas to representing the Wakefield District?

Because of the one thing you fail to realise, PEOPLE DO NOT CHANGE WHO THEY SUPPORT, unless they're glory hunting like yourself.
Why would a life long Wakefield fan go to Glasshoughton to watch a new team they have no association with? why would a life long Cas fan go watch a merged team they have no association with?
Why can't you grasp the SIMPLE fact that existing fans don't want a merger, and would never support a merged team? there's a reason sports mergers don't work, and it's the main reason sports teams exist....fan base, people don't want to watch the abomination of a merged team.
And before you mention them, the Dragons and Wests aren't mergers.

Really? So if YOUR club was under the cosh from licensing, you would happen to support your club merging with a lesser rival in the hope it may make some ill-thought out super club that is going to dominate Super League?
If you merged Leeds and say Bradford together (they're roughly equidistant as Cas/Wakey), you happen to reckon that of the circa 30k combined fans between them, they'll get that attendance?
I reckon the majority would walk away and either support a bid to start a new club under the name Bradford/Leeds or would not support a team at all. They'd have no affinity to the new club - it wouldn't work.

Not at all. Ive supported Leeds Rhinos since I was 6 years old and they werent the Rhinos, I supported them because my dad took me.
Well Marketed does make people support a team im afraid. Otherwise, they wont go watch them.

But to use Smokey backwards-logic they WOULD support a new team because the be all and end all is watching a top class Super League team and if the club is marketed it would attract 40,000 a week! it wouldn't lose fans and it would gain more too!
Win win

As a Wakey supporter for 40 years, if there was no other option, I would go watch a merged Cas / Wakey side.
I’d love to have my day at Old Trafford, unfortunately, I can never see it happening as it is.
If / When Wakey drop down a division, that’s who I’ll watch, however, I’d rather watch a merged Wakey / Cas side than walk away from the game. I could never follow another current S.L club.
P.S – The last thing Wakey fans will ever be, is glory hunters, jeez, the highlight of the last forty years is a C.C semi-final win in ‘79!

Quote If you merged Leeds and say Bradford together (they're roughly equidistant as Cas/Wakey), you happen to reckon that of the circa 30k combined fans between them, they'll get that attendance?
'" Im not sure on the numbers, but if Leeds and Bradford were to merge, they would easily be the biggest club in RL, and yes, I would support them.
But as an aside, the comparison is flawed on the basis that Leeds and Bradford, geographically are much much much bigger than Castleford and Wakefield. Whilst the city centres maybe equidistant, the outskirts of Leeds are much further away from the opposite outskirts of Bradford than the comparison for Wakefield and Castleford (especially when you remember Castleford is the outskirts of Wakefield) So it is a much larger area we are talking about.
Quote I reckon the majority would walk away and either support a bid to start a new club under the name Bradford/Leeds or would not support a team at all. I really cant agree, i really dont think people would be so petty as to give up something they enjoy because it wasnt named how they wanted it.

I expect, deep down, most people feel like this, not only in Castleford and Wakefield, but in all sports in all places. Its just few are brave enough to admit it, and some still think if they stamp their feet loud enough it will make a difference.

| I live in Wakefield and support Cas, i would never in a million years support a merged team, simply because it is not the team/ club i love.
If Cas ceased to exist i would not watch another team, id watch SL on Sky and that would be it for me, I could quite happily find other things to do with my time that wouldnt costy me in exess of 1000 quid a year.
I watch Cas because its my club and the other people of Castlefords club. That means something to me something, I would not have this feeling for a fabricated Wakleford Tigercats Super Club that would be competing with the best no matter how long i mulled over it.
I like that fact that we as a club punch above our weight and when the stadium gets built we will be up there with the heavyweights. We will be self sustaining aswel which is more than other clubs are if there sugar daddies pull the plug.
Both Cas and Wakey have proud histories and passionate support, a "Super Club" would not prolong the history of these 2 great clubs.
