Seen this mentioned on a few threads. Why would the penalty have been on halfway?
It's not an offence to be in front of the kicker when the ball is kicked. The offence is committed when said player (assuming he isn't played on-side) encroaches within 10 metres of the receiving player at the time the ball is caught or the off-side player catches the ball himself. So the mark would have been within Rovers 20, not on halfway.

He ''tracked the wrong player?'' Every man and his dog could see as clear as day the player that grounded the ball was the player that was clearly offside.
It's incompetence of the highest order, and this clown is head of referees? He should be relieved of his duties, he's not up to the job. It's a farce.

No, Jon Sharp is the head of the referees.

| The result should stand. We as HKR must rise above this.
However, regardless of this it was a fantastic close game by both teams spoiled by an idiot in a box that wasn't watching the game. Whats the point of the effort if this little meglamaniac is given the opportunity to toss a coin to decide who wins. We have ALL sufferred unanswerable decisions at the hands of this 'character' but this time he has nowhere to hide. For the love of god, just sack his ass.

I'm not sure what, why or who you're having a go at there.
Plus he was perhaps 2 metres offside, if it had been a regular game with no video ref I'm willing to bet the try would have been given anyway.
That's not to excuse the ridiculous decision though.

| He's never been a good ref for the game, because he comes across to me as one who's always sought to be part of the limelight. Referees with 'personality' are almost always A Bad Thing. The only time they can get away with it is once they've got a reputation for being exceptionally good at their job, e.g. Collina, or Dickie Bird. Ganson has never been good enough to afford to be a 'character'.
Let's face it, good refs have to be almost saintly in their dedication. Its pretty much thankless, and not well paid, and your career scrapbook is pretty much filled with the mistakes you made, not the 1000s of good calls...BUT...that's the job. I wouldn't do it for sure, but those that have the desire to do it also need to accept the fact that they're not supposed to be centre of attention, in fact more than that, their job is to engineer things such that they're hardly noticed. I don't think Ganson ever accepted that as part of the job description.

I'm still confused as to how it is even possible to track the wrong player.
Surely you track a player and find he is nowhere near the ball so you go back and track another one.
In fact that excuse creates more questions then it answers.

Kind of what I thought. Which player did he track? Green was in front of everyone wasn't he so was always offside?
Surely if he tracked a player other than Green, he'd have tracked a player that didn't even touch the ball?
I don't buy it at all. It was definitely the worst decision I've ever seen from a match official in my life (a match official with plenty of time to make a decision, plenty of camera angles and no grey area for interpretation). Honestly don't see how Ganson can come back from this.

Green was actually straddling the halfway line. And in any case his position relative to the markings has no impact on how far offside he was.
I've told you what the official explanation is. You may want to speculate on other possible reasons. I'd advise doing it away from a public forum though, as you'd basically be accusing both Ganson and the RFL of lying. FWIW I've watched the incident multiple times and I find it difficult to see which player Ganson was tracking instead of Green, but apparently that's what he did.
BTW - hysterics and insults don't really help your point. I know you're in pain but try to show a little class, eh?

He is not offside until he encroaches the 10 metres or at least interferes in play. For instance if Eden catches the ball and dosnt move then the player has to give him ten yards, if he dosnt he will be called offside. Thinking the penalty would then go back to the place where the ball is kicked is quite frankly laughable.

| The interview with Jon Sharp is excruciating; he "tracked the wrong player" - what does that even mean? Given all of the available technology, time and knowledge of the rules, how the hell do you track the wrong player when looking for a possible off-side?
This one goes beyond the realms of cock-up, misinterpretation or error of judgement - it defies all possible logic that he wouldn't be looking at Greene on at least one of his reviews of the incident, particularly given the impact the decision would have on the outcome of the game. I'm also baffled as to why Mr Thaler didn't spot it on the big screen during the review and say, "I've got it Steve - the FC player was off-side."
I try to avoid ref-induced hysteria, but this one is difficult to explain away.

Sharp could only pass on the explanation given by Ganson. Although I'd have liked an indication of which player Ganson [idid[/i track as there are no obvious candidates that I can come up with after multiple viewings.
Once the decision is passed to the VR the on-field ref has no power to overrule. It probably never occurred to Thaler that Ganson would need any help spotting the offside anyway.

I'm sure I heard Cummings say recently that that's not actually the case; I could be wrong though.

He's already retired from refereeing. My guess would be that like Cummins before him the intention was to use him as VR on weekends where there were a lot of games. Guess that plan may need revising now.
