League position was irrelevant, we lost the league when we announced Lowes as head coach late last season. Smith had 6 months with the team and made them champions for the first time in 35 years.

Tony Smith should have been sacked after the World Cup.
The fact he wasn't was probably determined by two factors.
1. There's no ready replacement.
2. The RFL haven't the money to pay him off and pay a new coach they'd have to hire.

We all know though that SL isn't good enough to provide the number of quality players to compete with the Aussies and Kiwis.
First priority should be improve the quality of players and standard of play in Super League.
Until and unless we do that no coach from anywhere will get us to win a series against the two Southern Hemisphere countries.

I saw Tony Smith and Steve McNamara along with half a dozen or so players wandering around Australia Zoo just days before they got flogged by the Kiwis. (the first time)

I will remember it because McNamara queued for an icypole for ages before holding the line up whilst he tried to decide what flavour he wanted before dropping it on the floor as he unwrapped it thereby making himself look a bit of a goose infront of several children

I was in the kangaroo pen when I looked up and saw this bald bloke sending an SMS on his mobile...I thought...that bloke looks a bit like that pommie footy player Keith Senior...and it was.

Cant remember what other players there were there...I sort of recognised their faces but I couldnt tell you their names.

Some fat tourist in a Leeds jumper was there creaming in his bermuda shorts asking for their autographs and shouting to his wife 'Have tha gorra pen'?

Tony 'I'm a pom now' Smith was there looking as rapt as he normally does in his shorts and thongs.

The thing that struck me was how small and insignificant the players looked compared to the likes of Greg Inglis and Israel Folau.
