| Quote ="nottinghamtiger"Without wanting to drag up an old issue, I have no idea how anyone can deny that the Widnes fans didn't assault the Castleford mascot and make an effort to fight with the Castleford fans. On this occasion Widnes "fans" marched from one end of the pitch to the other, goading the Castleford fans clearly inciting violence. Thank god not a single Cas fan reacted (we have our share of idiots but they must have been on holiday that day), and the behaviour of Cas fans in the face of such provocation was praised by both the RFL and the Widnes club itself. Indeed, some of the Castleford players and some stewards needed to physically restrain some of the hooligans from entering the Castleford stand.
Video footage also clearly shows the Castleford mascot being attacked.
The incident at Salford was minor compared to the behaviour at the end of that game. Widnes did not suffer a points deduction, so Salford should be in no danger of this.'"
That day Widnes should've been banned from the following Challlenge Cup. The fact that they weren't and then awarded with club of the year bodes well for Salford in terms of being punished.

The irony that a Rovers fan keeps bringing up smoke bombs.
Did you forget about the bans you had to give out at Warrington in 2013:
[urlhttp://www.superleaguefans.com/forum/thread-13736.html[/url
Or the one in the Good Friday derby in 2013?
[urlhttp://simonwilkinson.photoshelter.com/image/I0000bVGfmWKP7j8[/url
Or the friendly in 2013?
[urlhttps://twitter.com/stevenpidd/status/293421925101887489[/url
And the friendly the following year?
[urlhttp://www.rlfans-hosting.co.uk/?p=441[/url
[i"...and the Dobbins fraternity for the idiots who let a off a red smoke bomb during the second half!"[/i
Even a report from Wembley that one went off:
[urlhttps://twitter.com/jack_haley97/status/627914902326349824[/url
It became a running joke about Hull KR and smoke bombs. I'd probably wind your neck in if I were you.

The media have blown it totally out of proportion and sadly the image of Sau grappling the fan make things look a hundred times worse, making him look like the aggressor in the situation.

I would be interested to know what did happen to the Widnes numpties who invaded the field at the semi.
"A few" banned really isn't enough.....depending on how many the few is. Certainly the guys attacking the mascot should have faced criminal procedures and should be banned from rugby league if that is possible. I'd say any that were at the Cas end rather than just meandering on the field should be banned too.
The rest should just be warned as a general communication from the club.
As for the Salford idiots. Again, they are so clearly visible on the photos, it shouldn't be hard to identify them. And ban them.
The players I'm happy were just defending innocent people.

Who do you ban though? Surely not every visible face in the pictures/videos? I know a few of the lads that have been pictured and they were doing their best to pull people away and calm the situation down. It isn't fair that they should be tarred with the same brush of the one or two who actually caused the trouble.

That's a very good point. The pictures alone shouldn't be used as evidence anyway, only as identification.
Huddersfield is awash with CCTV so should be able to show who is doing what.
Equally, if those people you refer to were that close, I hope they are giving their account of what happened and shopping those who stepped over the line.

For those of you who aren't aware a group of fans decided to set-up a fundraiser to purchase flowers for the players wives/partners and a gift for the children involved in the Huddersfield incident as a way of apologising for the behaviour of a very small minority.
https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/sal ... ?utm_id=89
The initial target was £200 which was exceeded instantly and the sum currently stands at £690 after plenty of generous donations. Any surplus money left over is intended to be donated to a charity (or charities) of the players choice. Depending what the total finishes on it could be quite a sizeable sum going to charity. It would be great to turn such a negative for the club and the sport into a positive one.
Naturally some will agree and some wont, but already positive articles have appeared online via The Sun and Love Rugby League which can only be a good for the club, the sport and reputation of Salford fans in general.

A good response- but what a shame it won't have the publicity of the original incident.
The fact that the sun has used the terms "shameful brawl" in the title just sums up the way the way our sport is reported. Even the good gesture is given a negative spin.

Well they did actually because they complained in numbers to the RFL. If it had been a reverse situation I personally wouldn't have complained nor would most Trinity and to be fair Bradford fans I know. The reason being that life for clubs like ours is hard enough without having to pay for faux outrage as well.
Of course the chanting idiots were the perpatrators but a small group of very precious Bradford fans (in this case but not for the first time) made it an issue which is exactly what's happening with Salford. You cannot get large groups of people with opposing beliefs together in a confined space every week and not expect some altercations - furthermore it's not new it's always been there but in the 1950's, 60's and 70's there was no CCTV or Camera phones to capture it on. Everyone in this country needs to man up and stop looking to be offended about every little thing that doesn't suit them.

I'm not condoning it but I would hardly call it "beating up the mascot", taking the mascots head off and kicking it didn't cause any injury and the first photo makes it look worse than the shove that it was, and at no point did the Widnes fans on the pitch start fights with the Castleford fans.
Just stating the facts, you can check them for yourself here:

Agreed, but the publicity isn’t the reason for doing it. Whilst most people accept that it was a very small minority that caused trouble after the Huddersfield game, this is about accepting a collective responsibility and apologising to the players and their families accordingly.
£700 has been raised so far, so I would guess at least £600 will be going to a charity or charities of the players choice.
A letter of apology on behalf of all Salford supporters will also be published in the match day programme vs Leeds next week.

No, of course not. I'm guessing you think the Castleford mascot happened to slip onto the floor when surrounded by numerous aggressive Widnes "supporters"? The video footage clearly shows the cretin in the red t-shirt punch the mascot, causing him to fall to the ground. The bloke in the white then forcefully removes his artificial head. Although it didn't cause injury, you don't seem to realise that these actions constitute an assault, as the Castleford mascot would have clearly and reasonably feared physical harm, even if none was suffered.
I agree that no actual fighting took place, but some Widnes "supporters" had to be physically restrained by stewards and Castleford players from entering the Castleford stand. It is more a testament to the restrained response of the Castleford supporters and definitely not an excuse for the disgusting behaviour of the individuals inciting violence.
As said, it's an old issue, but one worth comparing with the recent events at Huddersfield. In my view, the Widnes incident was of an altogether more serious nature, and as such Salford's penalty should be less.

| A total of £855 was raised in a day and a half. Donations had to stop online in order to withdraw the money and have it available in time for the Leeds game next Saturday.
Should have confirmation from the players which charity or charities they are going to donate to in the next day or so.
Great effort from Salford fans and the wider rugby league community.

| Everytime there is trouble at a rugby league game it's always the usual, football fans, soccer hooligans etc to blame.
It's tedious now, those people, and the people that have caused trouble at every other game recently are there to watch RUGBY LEAGUE, they are attending a RUGBY LEAGUE game! not football!
Maybe they are fans of football too? it can happen, myself and most of the people i attend giants games with are also football fans, we don't cause trouble or fight with people, same can be said of 99% of "football fans"
The sooner the rugby league community accept that there are some elements of nasty people watch our game regularly and that sometimes these people feel the need to act like complete tools, the better!

Well said, there has been trouble on and off at rugby league since the 1970s at least. Worst offenders in my experience - Warrington, Widnes, Wakefield, Hull, Hull KR, Salford, Bradford in past, Saints, Wigan. Best fans of the big clubs in my experience are Leeds.
