| Another good finish at the weekend - could he trouble McGillvary and Makinson for a place in the England team?

| Stays injury free he's an international winger. He's performing in an underperforming team and does not have the luxury of better players on his inside yet still draws out quality plays. After the two ACL's I thought he might have lost his pace, thankfully not.

Interestingly going off strike rate alone...
1 Tom Johnstone 1.2 games per try
2 Jermaine McGillvray 1.44 games per try
3 Tommy Makinson 1.7 games per try
Obviously there’s a lot more to it than that but makes you think.
All three are world class IMO.

| You're talking like Ryan Hall is finished.
A hat-trick on the opening day says he's still about and still in contention.

| Agree on Jerry. World class in his time and still very good but father time has caught up with him enough for Johnstone to be a better bet.

He is in truth. He may ha a grand season this year but he’s at the end of his career. Surely we now need new blood, especially in a position on the wing. Hall could still do a job but that’s not going to beat the Aussies. TJ is hungry and you can’t beat that, he will produce far more special moments than Hall can these days, it’s that simple.
I actually think TJ is a better winger than Makinson but I also think Makinson is more versatile but both should be first choice.
McGillvery and Hall are nice to have as a back up but they have both lost a bit in recent years.

| He's working his way into a spot if he stays injury free and keeps that up. The term 'World Class' is bandied about far too easily though when people just mean 'very good'. World class should mean you would be in contention to make a World 17. I'm not sure we have any world class players in Super League right now to be honest. Maybe Bateman.

Greg Eden since joining Cas in 2017:
74 appearances; 79 tries.
I’m sure you don’t need my maths to point out that’s more than a try a game.
If we are picking on number of tries and strike rate, Greg Eden is by far England’s best winger.

Coming back from yet another injury (his thumb rather than legs thankfully). He's potentially one more injury away from calling it a day. Didn't quite look himself last season when he did play either. I don't think he'll be in contention sadly and may not get a new contract at Wigan.
I don't think we should take two wingers as backup. Isn't the squad 24 strong? I'd be trying to go:
Full back, centre/winger (Farnworth?), halfback, hooker, 2 props, back rower

Luckily nobody does pick on strike rate alone.
Greg Eden is a great finisher and an all round decent player, a especially good team player.
However I know and I’d be amazed if you didn’t know is that he’s lacking composure, star quality, call it what you want.
TJ’s strike rate is right up their with Eden but when you then dissect that into how many were just being on the end of a great team play and how many were sheer individual brilliance then Eden is nowhere near Tom.
Tom rarely gets a walk-in especially in recent years since becoming a marked man yet the strike rate remains, the quality just gets better.
That is what you want at international level.
Put it this way, Powell ia a genuinely shrewd coach, if he were GB coach who do you think he’d pick - not Eden I guarantee you that.
Now for your truly stupid comment that Eden is by far the best in terms of strike rate, rubbish, he’s marginally better per game. To be by far the best as you assert he’d need to be scoring 2 tries per game at least and he doesn’t. Monumentally stupid comment even accepting the context you put it in..

The question was can Tom Johnstone (player of the round) force his way into the England team where the current incumbents are McGillvray and Makinson?
It wasn’t a “who’s the best winger in super league?” Type question. Plus isn’t he injured?

At international level you need to be able to defend which is why we should go with Makinson and McGilvray

Then it should be Tom as his defence is more than acceptable and you'd know that if you'd watched him play, but being a fake you haven't have you.
Tom had defensive issues when he broke through as a 19-year-old but so did Makinson and McGilveray, but being a fake you chose to forget both those players have 5+ more seasons under their belt.
Nor do I suspect you've seen much of McGilveray either in the last 3 years but let's not worry about either.

He maintained his strike rate of over one try every game he plays, as a result of not playing through injury.

You must not watch the Giants very much as Mcgilvrays defence is not the best (although his centre partner does not always help)
If I was choosing the England team I would have Johnstone over McGilvray atm

That first try was "world class", you will struggle to see a better try this season by anyone else and if you do, that too could be said to be a world class try.

That's your interpretation. Eden is the only player who actually scores more than a try a game - and he's therefore far better than the others listed.
Both players have something you can't coach: acceleration, pace and a natural instinct of where to be (unfortunately, in Eden's case that doesn't apply to defence).
Part of me would like to see Johnstone at a top team like Cas where he has even more opportunities, but part of me wants him to stay at Wakefield where he has such loyal supporters.
Would I pick him for England in the World Cup? Yes, if he plays better than the other options we have. Makinson is a shoe-in for the right-wing spot, but that other side is very much open for any player who puts together a strong season.
