| Why would an average Aussie know Blackpool Tower, Bruce Forsyth or Yorkshire Pudding?
If you reversed the situation English players would probably do worse.

| I go to Australia frequently so there ain't much I wouldn't recognise over there.
There's the Big Pineapple, the Big Lobster, Big Banana, Big Prawn, Big Ned Kelly, etc.

| I wonder how many Australians actually know much of their own history..not just the last 50 years.
I bet if you asked every one of the players of all three teams whom Keith Miller was you'd get a blank stare from all but 1 or 2. Not just a great Queensland sporting icon but one of the great Australian cricketers ever.
there are lots of people nowadays whom have next to zero interest in the world outside their own little bubble

You are comparing Blackpool Tower to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Really?
How Many Americans, Canadians or just about any other Nationalities would know the icon that is the Blackpool Tower..................
Dame Edna has spent more time in England than Australia for most of his career.
Do you know who this is?
Where this is?
The players don't have google next to them to look up the answer.

| I don't have an issue with them struggling with who Bruce Forsyth is to be fair! I did have an issue with Adam Blair not being able to name a single Wigan player when asked who he thought our danger men were at a dinner at the DW on Wednesday. It's the second year on the trot Wigan have played Brisbane and Blair played for NZ against England including 5 of our players only 2 month back. It was disrespectful I thought although maybe his memory isn't back in full working order after O'Loughlin smashed him in to next week when scoring at the KC.

| I've found that many Australian RL fans have very little knowledge of British Rugby League, particularly any who are under 40 years old. They seem quite insular in that respect. They could probably name Wigan and Leeds and struggle to name any other teams.

Your comparison is ridiculous and makes no sense!
So the initial aspect of asking RL players to name players in the only other professional league in the world from a team that is not only well known (pretty much globally within RL) and one that you played against 12 months back and indeed against players from that team in an international. ..compared to
Asking a British RL fan to name a team in a third rate sport that they'd have little if any interest in with next to zero global recognition wirhin its own, that gets next to zero coverage here that most Australians couldn't name or be interested in either...just lol

One , Central Coast Mariners, but then again I don't follow soccer in any country. My point is that a lot of Aussie [uRL followers[/u don't know much about UK RL. The percentage of UK RL fans knowing about Aussie RL is I believe far higher.

| To be fair Thurston has always come across not the most intelligent guy. Watch him whenever he is on the footy show or being interviewed on channel 9. He comes across like s big kid who always loves to joke around!
On the field though he has to be one of the smartest guys around. Game intelligence he is up there with the best.

I was not replying about the players interviewed, I was replying to LyndsayGill
Just because its the same sport does not automatically generate interest across the globe.

| I don't know many Aussies TV stars and I've been here for a long time. Mainly because Australian TV is so horribly bad and I avoid it like the plague.
I've been to Melbourne and Adelaide a few times and wouldn't recognise anything from either city. I wouldn't expect anyone to remember much of Brisbane either to be fair. Its hard to remember anything of note even when you live here. Sydney has the only world famous man-made landmarks in Australia.

Not sure if that is a trick to test people - but i'll take the bait.
Miller is a proud son of Victoria - born in the oddly named Melbourne suburb of Sunshine (which is the most dismal industrial suburb in Australia possibly). He was also a star Australian rules player.
He might have died in Queensland. Half of Victoria go to Queensland to die.

| On how much young Australians know about England - not that much.
Our schools used to teach a very anglo centric version of history 30 or 40 years ago, and we used to have some English TV shows and movies, but these days we don't learn about dead kings and queens, and live royals only appear in women's magazines not read by anyone under 45.
If you go back to the 1950s or so, young Australian's travelling to England would say they were going "home", even though they had never been there, and Australian schools taught they same version of history as English schools, even to the point of calling Australian troops in WW I "British forces" - but now we learn history from an Australian perspective, and you are just a tiny island on the other side of the world.
