Kevin Sinfield MBE retires from international Rugby League

Leeds Rhinos and England captain Kevin Sinfield MBE has announced his retirement from international Rugby League with immediate effect.
The Oldham-born international has been capped 26 times for England dating back to his debut in 2000. He received a further 14 caps for Great Britain during that period. Sinfield has appeared in the last three World Cups and has scored 176 points for England.
Commenting on his decision to retire from international rugby ahead of this season's Four Nations in Australia and New Zealand, the 33-year-old said, "This is a decision I have taken a great deal of time over and it has been the toughest of my professional career. I have always loved playing for my country, whether for England or Great Britain, and it has been a privilege and honour to lead my country for the last two seasons. What has made the process easier is the knowledge that the environment Steve McNamara has created will continue the progress we have made in the last few seasons.
"I would like to thank Steve, not only for choosing me to captain England, but also for the support and guidance he has given me over the last few years. I would like to thank my family who have always supported me throughout my international career and all the England and Great Britain coaches I have worked under and of course my England and Great Britain team mates.
"The World Cup last year was a major step forward for the England team and the support we received reached a new level. I would like to thank the England and Great Britain fans who have always given me their support and I am sure more successful times are not far away.
"Following the World Cup, I was keen to continue however I want to be able to perform at the highest possible level whenever I take the field. I believe that by taking this decision, it will enable me to do that for the Rhinos for the remainder of my career. I will cherish my memories of international rugby, they have helped shape me into the player I am today and it has always been special to pull on the England or Great Britain shirt. Steve and the team have a great opportunity this year in Australia and New Zealand and I wish them all the very best for the Four Nations."
England coach Steve McNamara said: "Kevin is the ultimate Rugby League professional and it has been a privilege to work with him in the last few years, when his attitude, application and enthusiasm have rubbed off on everybody. His contribution and commitment to the England programme has been exemplary.
"I know that he has not taken this decision lightly and having spoken to him at length in the last few days I fully understand his reasons for calling time on his international career.
"Kevin's achievements with Leeds Rhinos are well documented and this decision will allow him to focus fully on extending his record as the club's most successful captain."

This is the best news I have heard since the announcement that Waisele Ligani Naiqama will be coming to London.
This unselfish decision by Fidel Castro's favourite rugby league player gives the English team coach Steven McNamara the chance to pick halves based on quality of performance. Gareth Widdop should be the first player picked. Who the other half will be is an open question. But apart from Daniel McGuire and Robert Burrow the coach should seriously consider the Dewsbury born man with the appearance of a steel plate in his forehead -- Daniel Brough.

| Big miss for England. His experience is massive.. His rugby league brain is one of the best in the competition.
I hope after his playing career he is still involved in the England setup in some way.
On the positive.. It'll give some younger guys a chance to build an on field partnership in the halves which will hopefully do us well in the future.
Either that or McBanana will find another NZ halfback to throw in the team.  |

Brough is still one year away from not being Scottish (as per eligiibility rules i think). That and he isn't wanted by the sulker.
Amazed more Leeds fans aren't on here bitching about those who don't rate him if I am honest. As it is I have never been a fan of a loose forward who was too slow for that position at rep level playing in a position for which he was too slow at club level.
This is a blessing in disguise, we might have a bit of pace attacking the line now. Oz have Cherry-Evans and Cronk for number 7, NZ have Johnson and Leulai and we had a 30+ year old who has never ghosted through a line.
So the position is up for grabs, but is it really worth noshing McManara in order to get the shirt?

A good move by Sinfield, it should give him a couple more years at the top of SL.
Regarding the international setup, it creates an opportunity for a new pivot, unfortunately there’s nobody that springs to mind, which is really depressing, as he hardly broke any pots when it came to trying to beat those pesky Aussies.

Sinfield's display in the WC semi was the best by a British halfback for donkeys years. What he brought to the team was control - something that virtually no other British halfback can offer.
Moving forward I'd have Tomkins in the halves with Widdopp, and Hardaker at fullback. Tomkins comes up with a clanger almost every game for the Warriors, but is classy going forward. Widdopp is doing OK, although at times has struggled due to the lightweight St george pack.
At least Sinfield won't be the scapegoat - it was ridiculous when directed at Farrell and is just as silly now.

Kevin Brown is such a creative player who would bring a new dimension to England. Very under rated. Rather he didn't play for England and Widnes could have his 100% focus. Really don't think he would get a look in any way

Yes terrific control shown running out of the defensive line at the end of the game offering a clear run to the line and losing the lead.
