| Well thank god that's over.
He rolled into super league and butchered the game. He turned one of the games premier clubs into an anti rugby team. A team that niggled and spoiled it's way to victory. A team that, how should I put this without getting trouble? They used 'questionable' tackling and ruck techniques (you all know what I'm talking about).
I don't know Maguire personally, he could be a stand up bloke in real life, but purely on him as rugby coach he's a tw*t of the highest order for the way he coached his team to play.
Hopefully wigans next coach will revert back to their tradition and be pro rugby like we all know they are capable of doing.

| I agree. Hopefully they don't continue with it. It's entirely possible to be aggressive in defense without trying to injure opponents. Look at Warrington's defense.
All this attention on pressure points and joints has been a worrying development. All sparked by his time at Melbourne, a club where the rules are never really much of a concern.
Look at minute 44 or so of the weekends game and the challenge on Andrew Dixon. Absolutely horrible and entirely deliberate. How he escaped without an operation and a year of rehabilitation is beyond me, and they've done it all season.
I've heard a few on the Wigan board say this year that it's not gone down well with certain players there either.

| Complete myth tbh.
Back it up with facts, like how many Wigan players have been banned for 'dangerous tackling techniques' in the past two years.
I'll wait but I won't be holding my breath.

| I wonder what price the bookmakers would have given on so many Catalan players being forced from the field in the first 20 minutes of Wigan's make or break game against them.

Must have been a really poor coach, I mean, two years of trying to 'end careers' and never managed to end one.

Probably because Mr Dixon isn't as soft as the idiots who've never played the game banging on about Wigan all the time. Tomkins takes more dirty hits in a game than the average player does in a season. Presumably that's OK though, because he sometimes tries to milk a penalty, which, as we no, no other player at any club other than Wigan, has *ever* tried to do.

| Whilst you may have a point about the "questionable tackling techniques", I think calling them anti-rugby and saying they niggled and spoiled their way to victory is extremely harsh. Some of the attacking stuff they have played over the last 2 years has been really good to watch

Mr Lima receives so many letters about his questionable technique that he's making an income from paper recycling.
Wigan repeatedly attacked standing legs when players were held up this season and a fair few injuries did result from it.
The difference between Dixon losing his career and not was pure luck. The intent to mame was there.

| Once again, how many bans have been handed down to Wigan for these illegal tackles?
I note the change in attitude this year as opposed to last; last year it was all whinging about 3 in the tackle, this year every other club has taken this up and now it's whinging about these mythical dangerous tackles.

Mythical? I take it you've watched the replay of the game? Look at the Dixon tackle and tell me that's not malicious. Look at Lima on Lomax and his twisting his leg. They've been doing it all through Maguire's reign of terror, hold the man up and third or fourth man in 'snaps the pole' by attacking the side of the knee joint.
It's not just me and other posters on here either, several coaches both here and in the NRL have complained about it (About Melbourne). Mick Potter called it right when he spoke candidly about it, saying he didn't feel it was morally acceptable to send your players out to deliberately injure opposition players.

Did both players get up with no complaints and play the ball? I've honestly not even seen the game yet (and don't intend to )

| I agree totally with the above comment, what a load of rubbish maguire has brought great things to wigan and rugby league. The game has changed and for just one example wigan through 3 x balls from right to left in a near perfect fashion with other teams like warrington have adopted and used to great effect this year using brett hodgson to great effect just like wigan do with sam

| A young up and coming coach in Australia given the opportunity to cut his teeth in the UK with the worlds biggest club. Makes no signings takes them to league leaders and a grand final win in his first year. Then comes a narrow loss to St George in the world club challenge, then he guides them to a CC final win (best team in the comp by far). Then he coaches a team to second spot (only 4 losses in weekly rounds) for them to lose narrowly in the semi final. He's now heading back to Oz to coach probably the most historic team in the NRL.
He's never moaned about our game, player or team, and comes across very proffesional in his approach to the game.
British RL fans are fickle.

You'd do well to watch Wigan when they have the ball and not just focus on what we do without it.
Some sublime rugby has been on show from Wigan this and last season.

Quite surprised by that to be honest given you've got children of your's playing the game. How would you like it if one of them was 'tackled' like Dixon was by Lima in a deliberate attempt to ruin his knee joint?

You see Saddo, just because you like to repeat yourself in trying to convince us all it was a pre-meditated and deliberate attempt to maim/cripple/kill, doesn't make it true.

So you think all the people complaining about Melbourne's and Wigan's 'technique' this season are lying?
Neither club won their respective competitions so it's not like you can throw the jealous angle in.

No. I've never said they were lying, nor have I condoned any of the tackles.
You're insinuating that Wigan, through their coach or players are [udeliberately[/u attempting to severely injure other players.
That's the word I take issue with.

It's a known technique that came from Melbourne. It's called the cannonball tackle and caused a lot of controversy when a 16 year old lost his career to it. The links to the Storm are there.
I'm sure when they are coaching it they talk about dominating the ruck and the intention may well be to put the player on their back. But it is such a dangerous technique that it could easily end a player's career. Which is why Potter said:
Quote ="Mick Potter"Other clubs could use the same tactics but that comes down to the ethics you want to have at your club. It's tempting, but if you are potentially going to injure people by doing it then it's not an option and not the way to go for me'"
and Tony Smith said:
Quote ="Tony Smith"I am not happy. I have been warning people about those sort of tackles for a long time.'"
All season there have been rumours posted about how Wigan coaches have been heard instructing players to stop holding back and start 'snapping the pole'. It's undeniable what those sorts of techniques will result in if they keep doing it.

But that's not what you were constantly alluding to.
It's a highly contentious issue, and not one that I'll defend because the rules are (quite rightly) there to prevent it because of the dangers it can cause, but I refuse to accept that Maguire, Lima or anyone else in any team is deliberately aiming to cause a serious injury to a fellow professional.
