Anthony Mullally from Widnes Vikings has signed for Brisbane Broncos.

It's a loan deal so he's in the Under 20's. The intention is he plays there for a year and comes back a better player in anticipation of Super League in 2012. I am pretty sure we have an agreement whereby we reciprocate the favour with one of their younger players.

Mullally must think it's gift week. Who wouldn't appreciate a 12 month paid holiday in Brisbane? Is he any good? I've not heard much if any mention of him.

Good luck to the lad, but what happens if he decides that the grass is greener in Brisbane that it is in Widnes and does not want to come home. I know if I was 19 and had the choice between the two where I'd want to be.

He's under contract at Widnes in 2012, so if he wants to stay, fine, we'd get a fee.

He has all the physical attributes to go well. He has stoood out at academy level because of his size, but as he's only 19, the club taken quite a cautious approach about his 1st team appearances. The club have always thought a lot of him as he has been a member of the 1st team squad since he was 17. If he knuckles down over the next 12 months then hopefully we'll see the benefit next season.

I wasn’t having a pop AJ. It would be a shame if that were to happen, but it is the only downside I can see from a system like this which no doubt has great benefits to both the player and the club. I’ve been speaking to a few Widnes fans that I work with today and they said that in the two pre season games against Warrington and the Crusaders he was the best prop in a Vikings jersey. But as a supporter of British RL I would like to see our best players playing in our competitions. However I understand that to be competitive internationally it is advantageous for more of our players to be playing in the NRL in the short term, with the long term vision (or dream as it may be) of having a British or European competition/competitions as strong if not stronger than our Australian counterparts.

In Widnes, the grass is so green, it even glows at night.

This is just a pilot-project but, if this is beneficial to young Mullally, then it could be repeated with more of our youngsters every year. I’m sure all of the Super league clubs will also be interested to see if this works too. It could be a major boon for the international side in the future as well, so I have my fingers crossed that it works out.

I wish Anthony well, but he’ll have to really knuckle down and soak up everything that he is told, like a sponge. He will have the some of the best coaching staff on the planet to learn from and he’ll be at one of the best clubs in the world. That should be enough to inspire any youngster.

There are risks involved, but I reckon that it’s well worth trying this out – nothing ventured, nothing gained. I think I'll be keeping an eye on him, to see how he’s getting on over the next 12 months.

What a tall lad he is!
Paul Cullen described him as big and raw boned and that sums him up.
He flies out Friday and plays the following weekend in the U20s Toyota Cup.
He should do well and I'm sure he will.

It's a great idea but i'm surprised nobody has been along to rubbish it...yet.I reckon there's no risk involved at all,Mullally can't fail to improve and learn from the experience.

id its just a training spot its fine but more than likely it would be a place in the under 20s team which would waste a spot for another kid who could play for the broncos one day.

phil gould is the one who raised this as an issue during the quad nations, saying 30 kids should come over and im sure it will the player develop

im guessing widnes are still paying the kid whilst hes in australia

and im still surprised an nrl club would do something for the good of the english game where they get no benefit, especially if its a club like the brisbane broncos

Think the clubs are looking to forge an official partnership. Perhaps Brisbane could unload players to Widnes?
