| One answer, to me it sounds like the NRL does not give one iota who goes. They never have they never will.
And for some strange reason they never come out publickly and stop players from going, and offer our players more money.I just don't get it.
Just what if more go? as a result of million dollar signing I'm sure more will follow.
But I couldn't give a damn they can sign all our players nothing is ever going make me wanna support afl and I mean NOTHING.
But I heard the afl wanna take over NSW and Queensland as the number one sport, these s think they can just walk in and take over.......
They don't relise how much tradition there is in NSW and Queensland,to think they're going to take over is really laughable.....
Can't wait to have the second laugh....

| NRL is impotent. It simply does not have the $'s to compete with RU or AFL. One day we might get a management that can actually turn the games popularity into cold hard cash but until then we will continue to be the player development for other codes.
WHat do you expect Gallop to say? "well actually yes we are 5h1t at running the game and as a CEO i take repsponsibility for the fact the AFL has an income twice ours"? Not very likely is it?

Gallop fires up: (well as much firing up as a pencil neck weasel News Ltd stooge can anyway!)
Quote Folau follows another former Bronco Karmichael Hunt, who will play for Gold Coast Football Club in the AFL, in switching codes.
"Obviously this is a very, very big punt by the AFL," Gallop said.
"It's a huge amount of money to spend on one player."
Gallop says Folau's conversion "can only throw out of whack their draft and (salary) cap system".
He questions how the AFL could preach talent equalisation and salary parity when they "have a player come from the outside on such a massive amount of money".
"They have manipulated it again today in a way where I think other clubs in the AFL would be scratching their heads," Gallop said.'"

| The good people of Victoria seem to think that rugby league is "Going down the tube," and "Soon to be taken over," and "We'll take all players." All in all they think it's a dying sport and this probably confirms it in their minds.
The AFL are delusional and think they can rule the world, never mind Australia. They seem to think their mediocre product has some right to dominate over all others.

| The problem the NRL - and therefore Gallop - has is money, pure and simple. Only a few clubs could individually afford to spend much more than they are doing now - another few can just about manage as they are, and there are also a few sides who cannot afford the cap as it stands. The problem is that all the current options to increase money to individual players (third party cash etc) would tend to wipe out the whole purpose of the cap - the level playing field - as you'd simply get massive amounts doled out to a few players who'd eventually gravitate to a few 'star' teams. The Broncos could wrench back all the quality players in Queensland very easily with no cap for example. This would rightly upset the clubs with no star players like the Sharks (s).
So whilst the NRL has looked at ways of getting round the cap to help keep the likes of Johns in the sport, I think they've realised there's not a huge amount more they can do until/unless the sport as a whole gets a big increase in TV money. Increases for rep football are a start - its quite pathetic how much the players have been paid for Origin and Test matches.
They NRL will also probably - and rightly - point to what happened when the ARU started poaching stars. It was seen as the end of the world but in the end the ARU realised it was wasting its time, as I think the AFL will as well. Signing players who are a star in one sport and expecting them to bring masses of fans with them to another is a bit silly. I bet on balance the ARU would in fact rate the big cash doled out to the likes of Sailor and co as a real waste in the end, and I'd be very surprised if AFL wasn't saying the same thing ina few years time.

| the nrl should try and get money from all the gambling done on nrl games.
they should get a % of the takings just like the horse racing industry does... this would solve all the nrl problems and lift the salary cap considerably.
for the time being the nrl should allow clubs to pay above the cap to their own juniors if they have the money. this would mean the broncos, storm, penrith, saints and canterbury who produce many juniors would benefit.
other teams like raiders and warriors are skint so cant afford extra payments.
it would allow storm to keep slater, inglis, cronk and smith and reward them for producing these great players instead of penalising them for being too good.

| NRL's problems are not just down to TV money. AFL gets just under $50mill a year more in TV deal money than the NRL. They also have over $100million on top of that beyond NRL's revenue. Even on the same TV deal the NRL would still be $100mill less revenue a year than AFL. Our failings are at the top and the scary thing about the supposed IC is it is fundamentally the same people in the positions of power as now.
And this isn;t just at Code level, at club level it is the same with the majority of AFL clubs having revenues way in excess of what NRL clubs are bringing in.
Our problems go far far deeper than a poor TV deal but everyone seems to see that as the panacea that will allow us to catch up to AFL.

league gives the impression of still being in the chook raffle days run by booze hounds from the local rsl club.
the afl will always have more money cos it gets at least 3 times as many fans thru the gate and much more sponsorship... it has a much better reputation in society than league and its players are welcomed in polite society unlike league players who are thought of as bogans and knuckle heads.
this big pay day at the next tv contract is no certainty.

How will a small grilled or toasted ciabatta roll that typically contains cheese help us catch the AFL up?

the nrl should be renamed the nfl... national feeder league.
if league keeps going like it is it will inevitably be destroyed by market forces as all the talented young sportsmen at school decide to play other sports and league is what the left overs play... those that dont have the skills or athletic ability to play soccer, union, afl, basketball, tennis or golf.
without the superstars a sport is very mediocre and wont attract the fans, sponsors and tv ratings.
