This story has been doing the rounds in Australia for a while now and the people organising it say this new 'hybrid game' is not intended to replace either code but to offer a third alternative in the face of the growing threat posed by AFL expansion particularly in Sydney where NRL crowds are falling and on average are down on last years totals.
The new rules have been thought up by ex Union player Mark Ella, former Wallabies coach Bob Dwyer and Manly rugby league great Bobby Fulton.

You would have to ask one of the 3 gentlemen who thought up the rules that one
I like the fact they want contested scrums though.
That is definitely one part of our game I would like to see brought back in.
The current RL scrums are laughable the way they are. |

I voted no. Stick to what we have. RL is on the up in europe so why add another sport to compete with.

How do players no how long they have on the 'shot clock'? I wouldnt watch a sport that has different rules for different halves of the pitch anyway. Too confusing. There wont be a merger, people are just looking for escape routes because NRL crowds slumped a little.

Sorry maybe Generalised NRL based on Sydney, I dont watch NRL so wouldnt know to much about there crowds. But still, my point is, as soon as someone senses panic, people start to come up with alternatives. I just dont like this one. |

Merging with Union would just be like playing RL from the 50's. By nature RL is Union with 100+ years of innovation and improvements. Trying to adapt Union rules would just be stupid, they are out of date.
And people wanting competitive scrums to return need to get a grip. Competitive scrums are a joke, they are a blight on the game and in terms of the rules don't make sense. Getting rid of them was one of the best rule changes we have made.

Nah, over seven minutes to set and reset and reset a scrum would be laughable and no serious sport would allow such a time wasting exercise...
The RL scrum acts as a set piece to bring the ball quickly back into play while allowing the attacking side a bit more space.
I guess the subtle nuance's of Rugby League are just lost on those more used to the lumping it up of union.
