You've still got your Cullen ears on. Cullen very articulately and passionately says nothing at all. Clarke has exactly the same trick, except Clarke has learned to make the ends of his sentences have some connection to their beginning.

I was taught the principles of this when I was 12, were you asleep, or didn't you bother with school?

yes, you've got it.
Quote ="debaser" So it a player drops the ball straight down when running then the ball will continue moving forwards at the same pace as the player? '"
Indeed it will, though it will start to slow down due to air resistance and will start to accelerate towards the ground due to gravity. But those are external forces operating on the ball, in a vacuum and with no gravity the momentum of the ball would keep it going straight on at the same speed forward relative to the ground as it was when the player let go.
Quote ="debaser"I'm sorry, but I think that's rubbish. '"
What it is, is pretty basic 1st week physics.
Quote ="debaser"The ball has no momentum of its own until it is given some.'"
Everything has momentum. The important thing in this context is the change of momentum relative to the ground. The player has changed the momentum of the ball by accelerating it forward (relative to the ground) so yes, it has been given some additional momentum by the player.

Oh, yes. From the rotation of the earth (about 1000 mph at the surface), the speed of the earth's orbit (67,000 mph), the speed of the solar system around the galaxy (about 150 miles per second), the speed of the galaxy through space . . .
That is one speeding desk

So don't tell me, if the Earth suddenly stopped moving then my desk would continue (but only if it was in a vacuum) but not forwards, as long as my hands were pointing backwards when the Earth stopped...

I understand it totally. But the examples they show are all forward passes. The only example when the passer gets flattened (towards the end) the ball is caught behind him, which kind of disproves the rule.
I am a momentum rule denyer. You will not convince me otherwise.

| If ever anyone loved his brother but was out to single handedly destroy his career it was John.
Anyhoo, frame of reference is king with momentum. A desk on a train has momentum if you're stood at the station, but not if you're on the train. Your frame of reference with passes is the player passing the ball when he's passing it, not the ground. Piece of cake.
