It's ok for Green to say that but we are only in that situation because of the recruitment policy. Once again we have a large squad where we know that a number of them will not see much 1st team action. We can look at the squad and easily trim a few of those out as surplus to requirements. That money could have been spent on a decent scrum half. That's my issue.

You can't 'trim' anyone who is contracted for 2016. I suspect those fringe players you want us to get rid of are in that situation. We're in a league where most clubs are part time so can't match our wages, so why should a player agree to leave? They are entitled to stay here and collect the salary we offered them, and unless we pay them out for the rest of their contract, the club's hands are tied.

| There are a lot of areas in the club that aren’t quite up to speed because of the situation inherited in 2015.
We’re lumbered with a few players I expect we’d like to offload because they were given 2 year deals last year. I suspect they were given those deals because we needed a squad at short notice and had to gamble on a few coming good. As a result we’re left with a few surplus to requirements and have less money to spare.
I expect us to be much better next year when those left from that initial recruitment are just the ones up to the job.
That said we do seem to have a fair few players who don’t seem to figure (Mendieka, Fleming, Baille, Walshaw, Uaisele etc.)
When you look at who we recruited for 2016 we have a lot on 1 year deals which gives us scope to be flexible which you need if you don’t know what league you’re going to be in. Trouble is that some will undoubtedly attract interest from SL clubs who are clearer about what league they’re in.

| I am disappointed that Jacks has not been offered a 12 month deal. To me he showed much more potential than Sjieka.
However I do not agree with those who are convinced that Addy cannot do a decent job in the halves. It's not just Lowes that rates him- many current players have singled him out as one of our best players and that view is shared by ex professional commentators.
Many on here have said they like him but not at scrum half. How many teams in the UK and the NRL employ a 3rd prop at number 13? How many employ a " ball playing" number 13? The days of Dave Heron, Ray Batten and Brad Mackay type players seem numbered.
And can anyone on here name a decent number 7 who is likely to be available?

| Ryan Brierley might be available! But I doubt very much if we can afford him.
I was impressed with the Halifax scrum half last year – Moore?
In my opinion Addy is a bit of an enigma. He can do all the things we want from a scrum half but he struggles to do them consistently well and can be exposed against the better sides. He’s a great utility player and someone I’d always fit into the squad. He’ll be becoming one of the senior men now so he needs to step it up. I hope he can do that.

Moore has joined fax this year from Fev.

I didn't say we should pay them off. We clearly can't afford to do that.
They are contracted for 2016 due to our recruitment over the past couple of years. I was highlighting the fact that a lot of money has been wasted on players who won't get any game time. If we are already spending too much on the squad to sign a decent scrum half then who is to blame for that? Is it the fans fault for not buying more season tickets or the bloke who has wasted a large chunk of our player salary?
I have no problem with Addy and he can probably play better at scrum half than anybody else currently available but he's not a long term solution. I'd love to see a young Paul Deacon type player pop up from somewhere.
Edit: I know Paul Deacon type players don't pop up very often before I get pulled up. I do think that is the type of scrum half that we need though.

| The only other name that I've seen in the media recently is Peter Wallace, but he's the wrong side of 30 (short sighted approach), has a dodgy knee (risky) and was playing first grade NRL last season (too expensive for us).
There might be someone in the NRL reserves / queensland cup, but you would hope that the club have already explored that avenue.

They probably have, but it hasn't worked out well in recent times for us. Likes of Dave Petersen, Chris Ulugia & Karl Davies all came from there. Two of them never played, one looked a bit rubbish.

I'm going to be keeping my eye on Ulugia at Batley this season, at least as much as is possible with the lack of media coverage.
I still think we were a bit hasty letting him go.

To be fair, in the game time he did get for us, he was often paired with Adam Henry. Even Lesley Vainikolo would have struggled outside him.

| Good point about Ulugia/Adam Henry but to be fair he did look a bit error prone at times and he had plenty of competition on the wing. I’d say our current wingers are all better than him.
The players mentioned we’ve recruited out of the Queensland Cup were below the required standard.

| Haven't Sheffield also left the number 7 shirt free for now? Shows that there is a lack of quality options available in that position.
However I guess that means that if a 7 does become available later in the season that you are likely to be competing against at least 1 other full time Championship squad for their signature. Plus any SL teams that are looking to add to their options at half back. A risky strategy in such a key position but there is no point signing somebody who isn't good enough just because they are available... like Siejka!
Be interesting to see who becomes available and who is in the fight to sign them when they do.

| I wonder what Siejka is doing this season? Maybe he should get into the music industry. There is plenty of precedent. The New Siejkas, and before them, The Siejkas (with the unmatched voice of Judith Durham). Then there was "The Siejka", a big hit for The Who and still a great record. I remember Kula Siejka who had a huge hit more recently. Are there any I've missed?

The obvious one, Harry Siejka. If I ruled the world, every day would be the first day of spring

That one was too good for you, but don't be sad, it's not your fault that you don't know the name Kula Shaker was itself inspired by the Indian Emperor Kulasekhara. I blame today's appalling dumbed-down minimalist educational system.

Could be good for us if he signs for them. One less club competing with us if a 7 becomes available later.

Maybe the money that could have been used for Caprice and/or Jacks was spent on Mathers?

Maybe. But they've said we will be looking at strengthening as season goes on so you would think there's a decent amount still in pot. Thought we'd have given caprice longer in particular given he was coming from union. Expecting him to get upto speed with a different set of rules and make an impression in time he was given seems a bit harsh.

Hard for anyone to say when we haven't seen enough of him.
London wanting him isn't a sure fire sign he could have been good for us. Equally, him not looking good enough when on trial, isn't a sure fire sign he wouldn't have come good and got us promoted.
