| I don't think you know what lower down and higher up actually is, person who is not Mick.
[size=50I also think the explanation would be worse than explaining momentum to John Senior. [/size

They'd need to keep themselves pretty fit if they did, I think? Unlike players, referees don't get much chance of a break during games.
I can't see why anyone would want to do the job, to be honest - poisoned chalice from start to finish. Thank heavens some actually do.

| If you look at this forward pass situation from a quantum mechanics viewpoint, its all quite simple.
The ball, being a (albeit rather large) particle, can clearly be in two places at once. So it probably was.
And it is impossible to observe both the position of the ball, and its velocity and direction, at the same time. As the touchie so ably demonstrated.
Schrödinger's cat can explain more fully.

That is very true. You can add in the words "If in the referee's opinion" before almost every rule in the book, from knocking the ball on to touching down, dangerous tackles, offsides and all the rest. All through the book, the rules mention what are ostensibly, objective incidents which are made subjective by being in the ref's opinion. Not sure how you can change that though....

I want that father & son duo who the camera focussed on in the seats to explain it to me in song.

Yes. Unlike sound it exists independently of subjective experience. Before FA chips in with his physics nonsense, vibration of molecules also exists independently of subjective experience.

So any experience you get from something that vibrates is not subjective?
And when you hear FA fart in the pub, are you saying that the fart is a pure subjective experience, notwithstanding that the pub would still stink even if there was no-one else there to hear his fart?

Any experience you have is subjective. So would the vibration of molecules at the necessary frequencies be if you were around to hear it, whether it's caused by a tree falling in the forest or anything else. Without being around to hear it though it is just vibration of molecules and nothing more.
It's not even slightly a philosophical quandry. Sound is a qualia. Light is light.
I have a physicist living with me at the moment. I'm a bit more touchy about this stuff than I really ought to be.

| Getting back to referees.
They do get stood down if they mess up big time!
Hence no game this week for Alibert after he awarded Warrington a try on the 7th tackle v Wakefield.

IMO there are too few full time refs.

| To be honest, I don't know how they manage to keep count at all, what with all the other things they have to think about.
They do though, virtually always, which is proved by the thousands at every game, counting along just to check.....That to me is the biggest surprise, along of course with the fact that so many fans [ido[/i bother to count the tackles to themselves.

I know I am going to have to confuse you all with high-end physics here, which only I am qualified to talk about, but I'm afraid the answer is in fact " No".
Anyone who wants the detailed technical explanation, PM me, but in layman's terms, the reason there is NOT a light actually there is nothing to do with people being there to see it. It's that there's a little plastic button, and when you shut the fridge door, the button turns the light off.

| It would be a meaningless check:
Quote ="vbfg"Yes. Unlike sound it exists independently of subjective experience. ...'"
Not sure we are all talking about the same thing. I suspect what most people have in mind in the context of this discussion is that tiny part of the electromagnetic spectrum which our eyes can detect, i.e. "visible light".
The fridge light would continue to "shine" even when off. A human observer would say the light was off, but unless it was cooled to absolute zero it would always continue to emit radiation, which would (for example) be readily visible through an infrared camera.
We can't see it due to the very narrow range of our eyes, but a light bulb which is off, and cooled to a mere zero degrees C is in terms of radiation an extremely bright object.
The converse is often observed in many RL touch judges, where frequently, there's a light on, but no-one home.
