I totally agree.
As a coach you should be able to motivate the team to try their hardest week in week out.
None of us know if he is or isn't trying to do this.
As professional rugby players.....if you've got the skill and passion you shouldn't need a coach to motivate you and play well.
What really concerns me is the lack of leadership on the field.
We need a Jimmy Lowes type of player IMO....someone who leads by example and is willing to voice their opinion captain or not.

| Some coaches can take an "average" group of players and turn them into a team greater than the sum of its parts. I don't think either Macnamara or Potter can do this. Or to be fair, even Noble. Noble had quality players throughout the team and coached them well. It's a lot harder to coach a "poor" team to play better.

| Not many coaches can inspire an average team to over achieve. The only one I remember is Sir Peter Fox who managed it time and again.

| Graham Murray managed it at Leeds, turning the likes of Andy Hay, Ryan Sheridan and Darren Fleary into GB internationals (SL has to be improving if players of their ilk are kept away from England jerseys!). John Kear's teams always punch above their weight, but rarely on a consistent basis. Michael Maguire and Wayne Bennett are other obvious examples.

I agreed with you right up to this point. Did you think Wigan over-achieved last year? TBH I always thought Bennett has had pretty good squads at his disposal with Broncos and St George.

gotta wonder if theres an element among the players who got away with less than 100% effort under macca (as has been mentioned in press by other players last year) who are now finding it a bit tougher under a coach whos reputed to take less of the matey matey approach?.

| Just a thought!. We are being coached by an ex-fullback and two ex-wingers. Who coaches the forwards? One idea, bring in Karl Fairbank part time. He is doing a good job for Elland and knows how to coach forwards. he would also have the respect of all the players.

Well you are just showing your total ignorance.
We are nowhere near as good as Salford, Crusaders and Wakefield.

started out in the threequarters in the 80's at fartown then moved to hooker and was a very good one at that, indeed he is considered a legend round his hometown.he could prob still do a job for the bulls now, give it a try

| This is a bit of a bizarre thread.
I think the team is underachieving. At the beginning of the season the general concensus on this forum seemed to be that the squad was better in quality than last seasons. Those same players have proven to be less than inspiring for whatever reason on the pitch.
You have to wonder whether they're suffering from the same 'issue' that Macca kept blaming last year - they're looking good during training but this isn't being transfered onto the pitch on game day. If so I can fully understand why Potter looks p*ssed off during the game (or it could be that he's wishing he'd decided to stick to his guns and go back to Aus!)
I'm not sure now's the time for knee jerk reactions. This was always going to be a transitional season - I'd like to say that it's simply a case of evolution rather that revolution but I'm afraid that even that looks debatable at the moment, but I think we have to allow a certain amount of leeway.

Well I suppose we have signed a player that was at the club when we "just" missed out on the playoffs after a decent winning run who was then let go before the club missed out on the playoffs by a mile after a massive losing run.
So that would be an improvement.

I've always believed that it's better to have two good halves who complement each other than two outstanding individuals who don't, so if MP thinks his 'new' signing makes a better fit in the squad then I'm happy to go along with his view. If I'm honest, much as I would never want to deny freedom of speech to anyone, threads like this are so surreal they "do my 'ed in"
