| Quote ="roofaldo2"I've said this before, but I think it may be worth repeating.
The guys we've got on long term deals are, most likely, on low wages this year with the promise of a big wage hike next year assuming we get promoted back to SL. If we don't then I'd imagine that those same players will have a SL club/non-promotion release clause in their contracts'"
This seems completely unfounded to me. Are you basing this on any factual information at all? Why would any player agree to this? We can offer absolutely no guarantees to any player about future earnings should we get back into SL.
I think what's more likely is that we've offered reasonable salaries to the majority of the squad, reduced wages to the younger/fringe players and a decent wage to a handful of key personnel. In my opinion the reason many (like Lee Gaskell and Dale Ferguson) chose to stay with us is because a) they were happy here b) their salaries were reasonable and c) the promise of regular game time and a platform to demonstrate your talents to other clubs (SL sides).
I think the theory of buy out clauses should a SL club come calling is also probably accurate.

I'm basing it on the fact we've got a £1 million salary cap and 31 first teamers. So, just taking that as 1,000,000 split 31 ways gives us £32k each. Now, given that the average wage for a SL player is approximately £65k it seems reasonable to assume that our top players will get bumped up wages next year

Well, each to their own I suppose. But I seriously doubt it is worked that way.

Players can make dreadful mistakes by leaving clubs and find that they are left in a vacuum of their own making i.e. Sammutt and Carvell.'"
I think it's difficult to make these decisions sometimes.
We have to remember that Sammut, Carvell, and I'll add in Scruton, were probably happy enough playing for Bradford, but had gone through periods of being paid late and, no doubt, had worries about not being paid at all. That they would have wanted to 'normalise' their employment situation was pretty clear, to be fair - and given a similar set of circumstances I'd guess they would again look first at how their families bread was going to be buttered. I guess the last thing on their minds was that we were going to hit some stability whilst their position at Wakey were going to start looking 'dodgy' again.

I know Dave Parker isn't the greatest RL journalist in the world, but if he's managed to get his sports confused then he might as well just quit right now

| Its the only logical reason to me as didnt Gaskell sign a 2 year contract, and why would Wire buy it out based on all the utility cover they already have

In same article where Parker said Wire could be interested In Gaskell it also said ferres had said he was our player for next year. So his current deal is 2 years as originally announced. Can't see wire needing him next year with other halves they already have under contract.
Let's face it, it would hardly first time parkers plucked a name out of air and started a rumour would it. Not sure I can remember any of his rumours ever actually happening.

| Oh come on, we ALL know where the Nosy one gets his 'information' from-: message boards, twitter and the like.
Truth is, he's the true bright individual out of the lot of us though - he gets paid* for using his tripewriter.
*That's clearly an assumption, of course and may be wrong, he may just get off on telling everyone that he's a bona fide journo and not bother about the remuneration..
Just a thought- won't we look idiots if he DOES go to Wire.....

| I think Wire are planning on spending big for a HB position with the marquee player rule (if it get pushed through) Cooper Cronk has been a player rumoured to be going there for a long time. Marquee player rule may just allow them to sign him.

Back in the glory days he used to write stuff like "A friend told me that there was an interesting incident in the Odsal dressing room this week" - presumably that friend was someone who read that week's player column in the T&A out for him to copy down verbatim as it was always the exact same stuff!

| I think calling them "marguee players" is unnecessarily harsh and, yes, a tad offensive. Wouldn't a euphemism like "big-boned" be less rude, instead of just ridiculing the size of shirt?

| Only logical explanation for this move would be a deal similar to Wheeler. Low risk presumably not that big a deal on the table but less injury prone cover for the halves fullback or knowing us some other position that we didnt know he could play. Somebody mentioned that we have Russell as fullback cover but i think we wont see him there again smith on the radio said he sees him as a winger and it looks like smith prefers Penny in that position at least this season anyway. I think if we do sign Gaskell then it will be to replace Gaz O'Brien and maybe Wheeler as well seeing as Gidley is coming as well

Might fit it with the rumours about Sammut to us next season already being done. Gareth O'Brian and Sammut as 7 and 6? We could do (and have done) worse. Gaskell clearly needs to be playing at a higher level, I'd hope that would be with us next season, but if he moves on after giving his all for us after sticking with us in this league this season I'd wish him all the best at wire. If its true hopefully he can help us get up first. But we'll have to wait and see.
