What case is there to rest? Given the problems he has had to deal with on and off the park, less budget than the likes of a Davy-funded Hudds or a Moran-funded Wire, and overperformance on the park? Few would not have had him at or near the top of the short list.

Just a shame the financial performance has not lived up to the playing performance.

When Smith and Macca became England coaches in 07 Smith had just won GF and Macca had guided us to a third placed finish. So they were the the 1st and 3rd best coaches in 07 (ok lets ignore the play-off game against Wigan

This year neither coach made the play-offs although Smith did get a trophy. So I would say their positions in the set up are linked to form of 2 years ago. I reckon Smith will have the power to pick his assistants anyway - he probably goes with Macca cos they are buddies.

Indeed. Tony Smith is actually a better coach than I gave him credit for. Surrounding himself with numpty assistants in Lowes and McNamara can only make him look better.
