No Saint that I can think of dominated the player of the season award like Phil Veivers. I swear the guy could run out in cherry and white and still win the damn thing.

He was also one of the worst fullbacks for cleaning out a player just after he had released the ball. Add to that the SHAME of being sent off for head butting whilst wearing a GB shirt.

Lyon was the Saints full back when I started watching, so I've seen a few. I'd rate the best catcher of a bomb as Patch, he [inever[/i dropped them and his extra size meant no one could compete in the air with him. Pity he wasn't that good at anything else.

This is very tough, i've been considering it for a while and still can't decide. I'm just going to have to plump for Wello, saints lad done considerably better than good!
And i can't remember Veivers ever having a flag!

Wello wins this one for me. Vievers was indeed safer than Joan Collins as the Wembley banner said, but Wello has dropped about 5 balls in a gazillion years, plus wello has had to play his whole career with a huge schlong, which has held his speed and acceleration back.

IMO I'd say dave Lyon was better than both. He was just pure class.

And played about 3 games in 45 years. Dave Lyon was a sensational signing for us, couldnt believe when we signed him, again wire letting a quality act leave their club. But injuries crippled auld Dave and we never got to see his quality week in, year out.

Under the bomb? Paul Atcheson every time.

He had an unfair advantage, not his size, but the size of his chin! You could catch anything in that chin, desperate dan styley!

I never really saw Vievers at fullback - Dave Tanner, then David Lyon were in the hot seat when i first started watching.

Atcheson was very underrated - his lack of pace and guile was always going to be a problem. Wellens lacks pace, but can always get around the first man in the defensive line.

Wellens for me - but Veievers' versatility and staying power over a long period of time makes him a proper legend.

I used to love it when he played fullback for you, as it was worth a guaranteed 12 points to us. He's not fit to lace Wellens' boots, who in turn is not fit to lace the boots of Hampson, Radlinski or even Lydon when he could be bothered.
