Except that isn't taking into consideration the overwhelming likelihood that the ball will go left rather than right. Neither Gardner nor Makinson can score tries if the ball never comes their way. And it still isn't coming their way. During our game against Widnes, even with no defence to stop us, 40% of the ball went left, 10% went right. (Thanks, Clarkey! ) To compare Foster/Meli/Jones on the left to anyone playing centre/wing on the right is not going to provide an accurate representation of the comparative try scoring abilities of our outside backs until we start passing to the right more often.

| Have we seen the last of Foster?. Maybe, maybe not. He could well get another run out if injuries require it; otherwise it could well be the end for him.
To be brutally honest if he did not kick goals as well as he does he would never had been considered in the first place. He is sadly short of pace for someone with his build; how many times has he been thrust back into his own goal area with comparative ease when attempting to clear the line, his efforts are truly pathetic; even though he is trying. The try he scored when switching hands behind his back was if truth be known a stroke of luck rather than genius. It was only through the rantings of the buffoon Stevo that put Foster upon the pedestal he was so quick to accept.
It may sound as if I am running the lad down, but this is not the case. I said it last year and again in a post earlier this year that he just is not super league standard, I say this of a lot of other young players as well, not just Foster. I wish him well in his career but there is no way it will be in super league.

If you compare his stats to Ade and Makinson last year.
Foster 0.8 tries per match
Makinson 0.35 tries per match
Ade 0.53 tries per match
Foster 8m per carry
Makinson 6.6m per carry
Ade 7m per carry
Foster 23 clean breaks
Makinson 3 clean breaks
Ade 8 clean breaks
Foster 1 error per match
Makinson 0.88 errors per match
Ade 0.8 errors per match.
That does not bear out the theory that he is miles behind the other 2.'"
Makinson 6.6 m ave from only three clean breaks looks pretty good against Fosters 8m ave from 23 clean breaks.
STATS? there are lies, damn lies and statistics.

Wrong!
It is a training ground exercise. He said so, on camera, at the time.
I can back that up as I've done it myself with primary school children. It's a very good exercise to encourage good ball control.
And yes, you do sound like you are running him down. He had a poor start to the season and he wasn't alone in that. But last year he did a lot to help us through the season and indeed in the GF, like kicking that incredible penalty from the halfway line. That takes real nerve in a GF when his team are on the back foot and have lost the game for the previous four years.

I think what he was trying to say was he wouldn't have practiced finishing a move by putting the ball round his back. Things like that do just happen sometimes in games like a miracle pass, you don't particularly practice them, they come off when needed.
Not taking away that it was brilliantly skillful though!

6.6 is an average, you can't average it again without knowing more info.
6.6 m per carry, each carry was not a clean break.
Anyway my point was more about how similar all 3 are, hence Foster getting far more flak, than deserved. I was neither trying to prove one was better or one was worse just that all their figures are pretty similar some showing strengths slighty in one area or another, but none stand out as the obvious choice.
Lets not forget Ade has been doing what he's been doing at Saints for 10 years and last year was probably his best in the redvee. So the point stands whilst he may not be a Ryan Hall, Foster is not a great deal different from Makinson or Ade.

| You can't have 2 shrimps on the wings.
The success we had in gaining momentum early in the set when Meli and Gardner were moved back to the wing positions was extremely significant. Their ability to gain yards on the kick return and "win the collision" is vital to the go forward of the set.
Makinson doesn't really offer us this and Foster even less so. We could get away with one, perhaps, especially if he was a deadly goalkicker.
When Foster came through, he didn't do much going forward, but was extremely safe in taking kicks (remember Stevo giving him MoM against wigan) and added a brilliant goal kicker to the side. If he can get back to a no-error form,he could sake his claim again.
However, I think both he and Makinson are too small for the reletively 1-dimensional postion of wing. If they are to have any long term success, i think it will be in the centre or full back positions were they can use a bit more guile in their game.
Comparing the stats of the two? Well, just cast your mind back to how much Meli put on a plate for Foster to finish, combined with the chances created on the other side, then you'll realise you have to look into the stats a little deeper.

| If he recovers his confidence then I see no reason why he can't get back into the first team. He'd need a good start because everybody will be scrutinising him for one reason or another and that's not good. If we can get behind him no matter what and he learns from his errors then why not.

Well, given that the head coach of a reputable local amateur rugby league club was the one who showed me how to coach it then yes, I suppose no further evidence is needed.

| I hope Foster comes good if for no other reason than I can't stand players being massively overestimated/underestimated from one week to the next (it seems that Nathan Brown has mysteriously let go England's answer to Cameron Smith according to some Leeds fans' view of Shaun Lunt).
Seriously in what universe did Makinson score the 'best' try in the GF last year? Shenton's was far better from a Sts point of view - lovely team effort. Not even mentioning any of the Leeds scores.

| Foster showed great potential last year when he was playing with confidence, looked safe under the high ball, scored some great tries (one vs Leeds at Headingley springs to mind) and is a fantastic goalkicker...
For some reason he has lost confidence this year and as a result has found himself as our 4th choice winger behind Meli, Gardner & Makinson. With Meli expected to be leaving at end of season, I think a loan spell to a lower SL club to give him game time at SL level could do him good confidence wise then hopefully next year he will be ready to come back and challenge for a regular place with Makinson & Ade.
For me he has the potential to be a great winger and maybe he got a bit above himself after last season and needed to be dropped, but I wouldnt expect that we have seen the last of him just yet
