| Quote ="Blobbynator"I'll be very surprised if Wellens moves roles next season, even though I do feel we need pace in the backline particularly at Centre and at Full Back.
I imagine the team will be:
Wellens
Gardner
Gidley
Soliola
Meli
Pryce
Eastmond
Graham
Moore
New prop (Luke Bailey?)
Puletua
Wilkin
Flannery
SUBS:
Roby
Fa'asavalu
Hargreaves
Clough
Lomax, Wheeler, Smith?, Ashurst, Dixon, Frodsham, McGennis etc in reserve.
Cunningham may get a new deal and if he does, that could mean Moore sharing the duties at 9 and at 7.'"
I'd agree with that except I'd play Wilkin at 13 and get him to be the third pivot with more responsibility to help ease Eastmond more into his role. If The King does get another year, I would imagine that he would be on the bench (in place of Bryn) and would be used more as an extra prop particularly if we don't sign a world class prop in the close season.

| Quote ="Carlos Alberto"So... keeping it grounded in some form of reality, signings wise, what would you like the team to look like next season?
1 - Johnny Lomax
2 - Ade Gardner / Jamie Foster / Gary Wheeler
3 - Matt Gidley
4 - Sia Soliola / Gary Wheeler
5 - Francis Meli
6 - Leon Pryce
7 - Kyle Eastmond
8 - James Graham (c)
9 - Scott Moore
10 - Luke Bailey
11 - Tony Puletua
12 - Paul Wellens
13 - Jon Wilkin
14 - Maurie Fa'asavalu
15 - Paul Clough
16 - James Roby
17 - Flannery / Ashurst / Dixon / Macgennis / Foster / Wheeler / Ellis etc
There are some very tricky choices there for me. The biggie is the backs. We desperately need an injection of pace into the back line, but putting too many kids in would weaken it too much. I would be happy replacing one of Meli and Ade with Foster. The kid will be 18/19 at this point and in need of the kind of season Wheeler has had; throw him in for a percentage of the games and see how he goes.
Wello from FB into the pack is a no brainer. If we start with Wello as our FB next season we may as well resign ourselves to no pots.
Every fan knows we need to bring in another big prop, and hopefully the rumours of Luke Bailey will be correct. It does leave us with an abundance of options for the subs bench then, especially if we move Wello to the pack. Could there be some truth in more players leaving at the end of the season? As it stands at the moment we'd have:
Chris Flannery
Tony Puletua
Jon Wilkin
Paul Wellens
Matty Ashurst
Andrew Dixon
Paul Clough
Shaun Macgennis
Bryn Hargreaves
and possibly KC all fighting for 2/3 spots.
What say you?'"
You are probably one of the best placed to say what options we have redcruitment wise with our finances, but we definitely need a prop and the fact we did'nt shunt Cayless out this season was a poor judgement in my opinion as it was clear he was in bother last season.
With regards to your comments about putting Wellens into the second row. I thinhk this is as bigger 'no brainer' as retaining his services. Toi be a top team, second rowers need to be able to break tackles. Yes the 'tackle machine' is good to have, but it is more akin to the game of limited substitutions as opposed to the silly 12 we have now.
Can you really see Wellens smashing tackles? I remember him as the narrow backed 18/19 year old who has worked hard to develop physically to get to where he is now. Pack rugby would be too much of an ask.
Which leaves two options:
1. Recruit some pace into the backs which will help Wellens show the form of 2006, 07
2. Move him on and get more cash under the belt.
I think letting Gilmour go was a bad thing as he was a tackle breaker and quick. The key in the pack will be the development of Magennis. Is he the wrecking ball we need to strenghten ther squad depth.

I have heard that Sia is likely to play at 11 in the Gilmour role so there may be a spot for Wheeler in the backline.

| Wellens is one of the few players who consistently backs up a break, half break or makes a run even when ball doesn't come free. If he were to play in the pack, he'd be knackered and this element of his game would be lost. Others have stated some other flaws with him being in the back row.
If, and it is if, the belief is there that he is not good enough for full back next year, he should go and make way someone else....not move to another position and weaken the team there (after all, we've got Leon Pryce for that!).

So you are going to bin Maurie and have a bench that would pretty much guarantee a defeat in the big games.

Wheeler
Meli
Pryce
Eastmond
Graham
Moore

Soliola
Flannery
Wilkin
SUBS:

I'm not sure if Chris Dean will be at Saints next season. I was told that he only agreed a one year deal for 2009 and I haven't heard if anything has been sorted for 2010.

Good lad but he wasn't going to be in the first 17 next year. With ellis and foster coming up to cover back positions, so his dest deal wouldn't have come from us. Good luck to him.

I've not seen enough of ellis to say how I feel he will turn out but dixon will be a squad player.
Dixon IMO won't be good enough for a 1st team spot.

I agree SKi.
Young Dixon is a second row on a progression path and accomplishing a great deal to date. I suspect he has worked far harder at learning his trade than St. Pete ever has at his.
Those who seek instant gratuity are better off finding another club. Developing second rowers and especially props is a far tougher task than bringing backs through.
The investment in Frodsham, Dixon and maybe to a lesser extent, Ashurst will pay dividends in the future.
