| Percival struggled a bit defensively, but was well protected by Wilkin. Offensively he was very good. Makes breaks every time he plays. If he carries on at this rate he will be an absolute world beater in a couple of years.
Turner very good all round, tackled everything and strong taking the ball forward. Nearly burst out of a few tackles. Looked like St Pete had had a word in his ear about putting in that little bit extra effort .
Walmsley and Puletua. Devastating going forward.
Wello. Captains knock. Leeds still exposed him for lack of pace with deft kicks, but otherwise he threw everything into that performance
Manu showed a couple of times that if we have him running wide, he could give Percival and Makinson a try feast
Negatives
Perry played the first 15 minutes but isnt remotely match fit.
The opening 20 minutes of the match. Shocking composure and soft defence.
Kicking game weak, both field kicking and goal kicking.
Soliola brain fart that will see him cop a ban.
Ashe, anonymous throughout and struggled defensively.
Wello will probably play the rest of the season at fullback now, denying Lomax the opportunity to dazzle us.

To be fair, if he had played like that for the past 4 years no one would have been criticising him in the first place.
Games like that suit him still, but if we are ever in a game where we're competitive in the pack, his lack of contribution to the attack will tell.

| Forgetting the first 20 minutes i thought the character and spirit shown was stunning.Great effort to even get the game back level but to go on and win in the manner you did against top quality opponents was great viewing.Given all the injuries and disruption you guys need to just appreciate what your younger players are actually doing. All good experience for them and when the injury crisis starts to ease up you will be in a fantastic position for the rest of the season.
Walmersley was outstanding and if he isnt the best young forward out there this season i would be amazed.Wellens turned back the clock and put in a real show of skill and leadership and as a Salford fan i was really pleased for Stu Howarth.
So congrats on a great win and just look forward to what i am sure will be a real good second half of the season for you guys.

| Quote ="No1 Saint"it was a tough gutsy display after the first 20 mins of shambolic bumbling . Wellens and Will in both stood up and as you say led by example.
on the other end of the scale though Perry was again pretty much turd and Ashe is never superleague class in a million years.
for the older posters here. does anyone else get reminded of George Mann when they see Willie Manu run?'"
As an old fart, he looks like Goerge Mann but Mann was more dependable but less creative.
As has been said on here Ashe and Perry were dreadful and was Ade (but first game back and all that).
Our kicking was awful, but the forwards eventually got their act together and Walmsley was immense; it seemed to spur on LMS & TP and then the whole team (minus Ashe) got in the Leeds faces and they just couldn't cope.
Been to every home game this year and can't remember (even against dire away) us putting the opposition under so much pressure. It lifted everyone, but Walmsley with a bit of help from Wello and Wilkin got the revival going.

| Having had time to let it all sink in, do you know what I take from that game.
We had it about us to kill off the game. There have been some games were we just have not been minded to see off the game. But tonight we did. We could have cracked under the pressure when with 20 to go Leeds upped a gear and threw everything at us that they had.
But we held on, defended the line and did not panic when they got one back.
I think that's the best thing from tonight.

Echoing all those praising Paul Wellens, thought he was very good for you guys tonight - I know he's copped a lot of flak of recent times, but he seems to really enjoy playing at Headingley. Can't remember him having many bad games against us when we've been at home over the years...
Well done on the win tonight!

| Quote ="Albion"Game completely changed when Puletua (who was great) and Walmsley came on.
Wellens was fantastic, my MoM by a distance. Howarth also played well.
Wilkin was annoying with his penalties and his kicking game wasn't great, but he was kicking off slow PTBs so if was understandable. We looked better organised with him at #7.
Perry can go now, what's the point at all? Only doing one spell again? I'd rather have Clough in over him.
Nathan Ashe? Ffs, he touched the ball at most 3 times.'"
The game changed when we started to get penalties. We had no go forward and couldn't get out our 20 until we got a few pens. This gave us some field position and our confidence grew.
A win is a win and it was a very good win but we can't hide from the fact that we was very very poor in the early stages. The defense was shocking at times and we couldn't make 20m per set.
Good win tho and hope its the platform we need.

| Wello had his first good game in months, lets not get excited.
The best part is the team actually played some decent rugby and defended well for about 60 mins, next week should be interesting

I'm not talking about people criticising his poor form, I'm talking about people calling him a loser, embarrassment, disgrace etc.
Given what he has given the club over the years he deserves better than that. Where Hardaker bottled that kick, Wellens throws himself in like he's always done.
Saying he shouldn't be in the team is one thing, some of the abuse he's copped has been quite another and completely OTT.

He sure can still sweep up the at the back. Young Hardacer would do well to take a couple of pointers from him.
During the awful first 20 minutes, when he did that dreadful bit of handling, I was cursing, but he did make up for it and more. I still don't think he'll keep his place from Lomax - although Brown may be too tempted to play Lomax as six. If we could get Wheeler back at the same time we could actually start going places.
We had a lot of good performers. Wlamsley and Manu were devestating.
After me saying that TP's big games were becoming less frequent, he was massive.
LMS grew in stature throughout the game, confirming what we have suggested about him being a better bench player. Soliola, although abit silly with his late hit on McgUire, was really putting himself about (Mcguire lost his temper with him a couple of times, so he was obviously getting him flustered).
Thompson took a bit of a pounding early on, but his second stint was very impressive - his try was excellent and how strong must he be to have got that ball down with one hand!?
Percival was a bit grabby in defence, but showed he only needs the slightest chance to make his mark. The try that Makinson (who was also very good) finished was executed in very tight space.
Tuner good, Jones useful from the bench.
Wilkin playing with a bit of swagger and a bit of a platform can do a half decent job.
Even Howarth did ok. I thought MoM was a bit obver the top but...
Pop Roby, Lomax, Meli and Wheeler into the 17 that performed last night and we're contenders. The only head scratcher is that we seem to have a lot of forwards who are better from the bench. I don't see the point in starting Perry for 15 minutes and then withdrawing him for good. Utterly bizarre. Especially when they're leaving out Clough.
Swift should be brought in next week for either Ade or Ashe. If he plays on the wing, then we should look to at least spell Charnock with Ashe. Drop Perry - either a straight swap for clough/hand, or move one prop from the bench and bring in Greenwood.
Basically tonight confirmed the thought that alot of us were clinging to, that we've got a pretty good tent, its just we're missing a few pegs.

I think your taking the criticism aimed at him the wrong way. Wello is Mr St Helens , he is a club man and I doubt any real fan who watches him week in week out would ever call him a loser or describe 'him personally' as a disgrace. Some of his more recent performances have been embarrassing ,though not ever through a lack of effort or commitment.
The only disgraceful behaviour I've seen Wello show is his occasional 'windmill' impression as he's shouting a screaming at a ref which for me is utterly wrong and has no place in Rugby.

Why would you split up Makinson and Percival for Meli for heaven's sake? Meli wouldn't have scored that try last night, he wouldn't have had the pace. Meli should be a back up in case of injuries. Let Percival and Makinson develop a proper partnership. With Manu on their inside that could be devastating.

| I hoped for a Saints win and they got one. It was a very exciting game to watch, if at times very sloppy. I really like the young guy Walmsley. After a very shaky start by him I must say that round the tackler pass from Manu to Percival for Makinson’s try was very reminiscent of the great centre Gene Miles. I think the short rest till the big weekend may spoil the party though, but I wouldn’t mind if you could do us another favour again. So good luck.

I'd drop Meli AND Gardner myself. They're the past. We need a future. But does Manu play on the right or the left? They need to be alongside Manu for the maximum effect. And do Percy/Makinson play best on the right or the left? Most wingers/centres have preferred sides.

Whilst centres and, to a lesser degree 2nd rows will prefer to pass one way, wingers have no excuse for not being able to play either equally well.
I played with a lad who would only play on the right, because he'd perfected a step and fend with his left arm, but he was one of the most phsycologically frail players I ever played with. There is no reason why a blunt instrument like Meli cannot swap sides.

So who are you dropping Meli (our best winger) for then?
IMO our best back line is clearly:
Lomax
Meli
Turner
Percival
Makinson

Brown really needs to play Willy on the left. He spent all of his time with us, with Yeaman and Briscoe outside him and they were devastating (in fact they were our only real attacking option). So far I believe he has been wasted and needs to be back in his natural position as soon as possible. Well done to your lads last night, that was a great win.

Yes. And that combo between him, Percival and Makinson just HAS to be left alone to develop. We cannot go back to Meli and brainfarts. We need pace and skill and to see repeats of that fabulous try from last night.
