I hate this overly simplistic view that I keep reading, that conveniently ignores the part where Brown took over a side that finished 10th the previous year and built them into the team you see today.
He also took the team through its teething pains - you can bet that there is a desire in the squad to avoid living through a mid season slump again - that motivation for the players may come as much from the pain of suffering it before as it does from a change of coach. Similar to the old having to lose a final before winning one, perhaps the young and/or inexperienced Hudds players had to slip away from a strong position before knowing what it takes to stay there - this was not a club with a recent culture of anything resembling success.
I'm not saying Brown is the answer, but to suggest he's a dud based on how Hudds are going this year is daft. Indeed - I suspect Anderson will at best replicate Brown's 2010 season of 3rd and CC Final.
That's not to say you can't judge him on a very poor season with Saints - you can IMO - but this comparison with Hudds (a young side on the up) and Saints (an old side on the slide coping with a glut of injuries) is a bit daft I reckon.

| One other consideration is that we have been dull as dishwater to watch most of the time for the last 5 or 6 years. Brown's teams ( Hudds & St George ) played rugby which was pleasing to the eye. We have a group of players who don't know how to play "[uThe Saints Way[/u" , and to bring that philosophy back will take time and patience.
To all Saints fans out there [u[size=150=#FF0000TIME AND PATIENCE[/size[/u.

| Two more props and a stand off and we should be a decent team, thats whats been missing as we know all this season, so that should be a priority before anything else.
Secondary we need to play as a team with the right attitude this is what has made us the worst saints team for 30 years.
I said early this season clubs will struggle getting proven quality players and we have hit this scenario first, Warrington for instance will lose half a team shortly with players in the 30+ agegroup. Only the Wigoons look healthy with good young players with the help of a good structure.
For Saints, we must find our own development structure to accelerate the like of Percival, Charnock, Swift, Thompson, Yates etc into class players to the standard
requirement needed for success.

Time and patience is all well and good, but just because the chairman declares we are rebuilding a team does not mean we have to endure the standard of performance put in by Saints on Friday - and that wasn't the first time we have had to endure such dross this season either. The team we field at present achieved third last season. Therefore, we should expect it to be competing towards that end of the table this season too, not making 22 errors in one match and gifting 8 points to the opposition through conceding penalties. Taking fans for granted this season is not the way to invest in next season. We have still had to pay to watch the team this season and so have every right to expect top effort from the team each week.

| Quote ="No1 Saint"Well when you've stopped acting like a tool have a think. 2 props, 2 halfbacks and a winger as a minimum is hardly something you want to do all at once really is it?

No point trying to convince some people even when facts are all around them. Fact - we keep losing games badly, Fact - we pick players all over the place instead of their settled positions, Fact - we are struggling to even make the top 8 , Fact - we have allowed ourselves to get into a position where we need to recruit a new front row and both halfbacks in one go , Fact - we have resorted to using other teams cast offs to cover in key positions because we have no depth.
Never mind, forget all he facts , you just keep living in happy happy land , soon you'll be able to just print out a copy of the table and turn it upside down then everything will be fine because we'll be near the top.'"
...and on what single occasion have I ever said that Brown is doing a great job and is the answer? Our personnel is not far off being where it needs to be, but enormous question marks still need to be answered over our coaching. We've not had a really good coach in 5 years now and that's been where our problems have been, not in this perceived "ambition" and "poor recruitment" BS (coaches aside). I'm as concerned as anyone else is over how half-baked we're looking at the moment (although it's still early days in his tenure as yet) - tell me when on any occasion I've said otherwise....

Anyone with half of brain knows we can never replicate the teams of the likes of longy, Lyon, scully, KC etc but we should have replaced them at the time we the best quality we could at the time.
Who replaced the following players ?
Longy -
Scully -
Graham -
Gidley -
Talau -
The are others but can't be bothered listing

| We can all debate about not replacing past legends, poor judgement of recruitment etc. But it goes much deeper than that we are a lazy, indiscipline team out of condition with a terrible attitude.
It makes you wonder what coaching staff Brown has got around him, KC may be a legend but I can,t see what benefit he has on the team, similarly our conditioner what effect does he have on players performance as most of the time we are very lethargic and unfit.
Since we left Knowsley Road we seemed to have left the fighting spirit behind. Our basic errors and non completions must be the highest to date in superleague.
If all of the above was addressed I,m sure we would have won 2 or 3 more games more this season, even with the player personnel we have at the moment.
Can anybody remember if we have played one game this season for the full 80 mins with commitment, desire etc. I can,t.

I don't think anyone at the club cares about this season. Just look at the chairman's statement. It's about next season. I don't think anyone ever intended to do much this season.

Your an angry man.
Longy was replaced by Eastmond who like you say was an amazing prospect - shame we didnt sort out his contract [ibefore[/i getting rid of every other decent halfback at the club. Some amazing strategy at work there.
Scully was a beast but I suspect we thought we'd replaced him with Wilkin - sadly thats a massive downgrade. Nearest thing to Scully is probably Westerman
Graham - well we replaced him with a second row - not exactly a great plan. The fact he's played for Aus in the back row hardly qualify's him to replace one of the worlds best props
Gidley - I suspect most people would agree we did ok here , Shenton didnt hit the heights but on the face f it was a sound signing.
Talau - for me this was the start of the rot - Gilmour was a second row who could provide cover in other positions, using him as a replacement and claiming there was nothing else out there is just plain cost cutting stupidity.

Anything is a downgrade on Scully. TP and Wilkin have been about as good at filling the role (some of their terrible injuries aside, particularly Wilkin's) as we could have found under the circumstances.

We've done the "who realistically could/should we have signed to replace Talau at the time worth the money" thing many, many, many, many times before. Noone has ever yet come up with a name we could and should have signed at the time that would have been as good as just moving Gilmour out there. Noone. Feel free to make your own suggestions though and we'll go 'round the whole sorry roundabout again shall we?
Nobody's saying our signings have all been fantastic or the right moves. All that is at question is our supposed "ambition" and desire to compete. In the last 3 years we've signed 2 Aussie international forwards, a world-cup winning fullback, GB's first-choice centre, resigned Robes, TP and Sia despite big offers from elsewhere, offered as much money as a rich RU club to keep Eastmond etc. etc. etc. There is no lack of "ambition" there whether numpties like it or not. You can question the wiseness and common sense of some of the decisions (Hohaia was a brainfart from the very start) - you can't question the "ambition".

Whilst it is a roman word, it has for years been used as an insult, just the same as a scally, scroat etc.
It was a word used by the privileged classes about the people from the lower social classes. So hardly a compliment.
The point still stands there is no harm in being civil when making your point. It's just common courtesy.
In the end when a thread breaks down into trading insults, the point is lost. And it become a keyboard warrior attempt to try and get as far as they can before the filter, mods or others have to get involved.
I'd rather just remind people that you can debate without insults, regardless of the level permitted.
