St Helens hooker Keiron Cunningham will be out for up to four weeks due to a minor knee operation.
The veteran former Great Britain international was injured in the engage Super League leaders' win over Celtic Crusaders last week.
The 32-year-old will now undergo surgery this week in the hope of returning to action ahead of the Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-finals.

I suppose the alternative would be to start with Wilkin, who would provide a little more aggression defensively in the opening spell, and use Roby in his usual capacity.
I'd prefer a Roby/Eastmond partnership myself though. |

So would I, Roby will want to start as he'll want the No9 shirt when KC does call it a day and the starting hooker should be No9 |

I dont think this is such a bad thing to be honest - sure we will miss him, but a months rest could be just what he needs before the August / September run in.
We should get Wello in for his knee op now too.
Expect Wilkin and Roby to share the hooking duties. Who is in the academy?

I know Cunningham's recent injury record is pretty good but we have to accept that as he's getting older he is increasingly at risk of injury. Another season would be a massive gamble for the club.

As far as I know we don't have any talent at hooker in reserve at the mo, hence the re-signing of Liam Bostock, who IMO is not good enough to be running out for the first team. |

Spot on, Wilkin has often taken the impotus at dummy half and his defence is solid enough to allow him to fill in. Not ideal but he can do the job as interchange.
I'm not sure Wello's injury turned out bad enough to need mid season surgery though i seem to remember something along those lines. |

I think it will be a gamble either way to be honest. We are steadily losing the core players that have helped us be so successful in Super league.
Releasing Long and Cunningham at the same time is a big risk. They aren't just pivotal players on the field, but off the field too. |

True, but have to look at the effectiveness of the player. I think it's fair to say that Keiron's current form is not what it was last season. If the decline contines (or, as is the case with other players, accelerates) he may hamper our efforts next season.

I've no doubt that Lomax could do a pretty good job at nine. But he's seems a bit too similar to Roby for the impact hooker to work effectively.

We [ishould[/i still see off Salford. If we don't, I don't reckon it'll be down to this reason.

I think Wilkin is the best option. His kicking game could be useful from the play the ball. Gives us an extra 10 - 15m.
