Quote Warrington wing prospect Kevin Penny has joined Widnes on a month's loan along with Wolves team-mate Steve Pickersgill.
Penny, 21, burst onto the engage Super League scene with 12 tries in as many appearances two years ago and showed further promise last year but has since fallen out of favour.
Prop Pickersgill, 23, is also down the pecking order at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and joins Co-operative Championship neighbours Widnes in the hope of gaining more first-team experience.
The move reunites both players with former Wolves coach Paul Cullen, who took charge of the Vikings earlier this season.
Cullen said: "I've worked with both Steve and Kevin at close hand and I'm sure they will be great additions to our squad."

Steve Tyrer is injured. Back problem. I don't think he'll be doing much for a while.

| There's a few egos there at Widnes now,
Bannister, Tyrer, Kavanagh and now Penny.
Oh, I forgot. Mr. Paul Cullen.

| I'd like to have seen him have a season outside Gidley.
Ok defence would still have been a problem but a good centre would have made him.
Widnes is a bad move for him

He is on loan to gain 1st team experience, as playing in the reserves is not going to develop him. I personally hope not only for Warrington but potentially for GB that he reaches his potential.

A month (or more if extended) loan at Widnes gives him the chance to show what he is capable of at a higher level than reserves where he is currently playing - if he wants to get back to Warrington (or any other SL side) he needs to impress enough to show he is going to be worthy of the place, otherwise he needs to perform enough to secure himself a permanent place in a side like Widnes.

| He has something you cant train and thats blistering pace. He has potential and if coached correctly could certainly become a top superleague winger imo. Most players can be coached into improving there defense and ability under a high ball etc Gardner is an example of that so there is no reason to believe Penny wont go on to have a successfull career.
This is a prime example though of young players getting over hyped well before there ready.

Gardner had a single major weakness to his game: catching a high ball. That's certainly coachable, although he'll never be outstanding in that department. Penny has MULTIPLE major weaknesses to his game: fielding kicks, committing himself too early (leaving him vulnerable to a winger stepping inside and the cut-out pass), a lack of physical presence etc. It will take a coaching miracle to shore up those problems.
Blistering pace alone is no reason to get into a SL first team. Brimah Kebbie taught us that.

| You can train somebody to defend, but you cannot teach them to be quick. Pace isn't everything, but for a slightly built winger it is the difference between having the potential to be average, or the potential to be a class winger.
I hope for England's sake that Ainscough and Penny fulfill their potential. I don't remember a time when our wingers in this country have ever been this average.

| Penny won't make a top rugby league player.
Just because someone has pace doesn't mean that they will be good with rugby ball in hand.
He can't defend, and all he has is pace.

Cant argue he has plenty of issues around his defence and I dont think he will ever be a Meli when it comes to physical presence (unless they legalise roids) but I think with good coaching and hard work he could overcome most of his problems. I really hope he does tbh because like others have said we are lacking quality wingers

He has a fantastic tallent for finishing tries.. did you see the tries he scored against Leeds and yourselves last year? There is nobody in SL that could/would have scored those tries. He has a tallent, defence has improved dramatically, just needs to work on his positional play... watch this space.

A lot of that can be coached, however the coming in too early can be due to a number of reasons, one of which is a lack of confidence of the defender inside doing his job. People also forget how inexperienced he is.
His lack of physical presence is more of a concern, if you bulk him up too much does he lose the agility and pace that give him the edge in attack? I'm starting to come round to Chairmakers full back idea myself, his broken field running he could be devastating.
