Can you connect laptop to telly?

This may sound a stupid answer, but yes you can, if

1) Your t.v. has a monitor input but you will get picture without sound through the t.v.

or

2) You have a laptop with a hdmi output and a t.v. with a hdmi input both sound and picture will come through the t.v.

or

3) You have a laptop with a t.v. out card.

I was asking HP if he could do it. I know it's possible as I do it already.
