| Quote ="G1"So you want to criticise Leeds for not adhering to a rule the RFL wanted to bring in but would have been incompetent in doing so. yet you're unhappy Leeds have complied with the sensible rule that was eventually brought in? Rrrrrrrriiiiiiight. How dare leeds no abide by the incompetent rule the RFl sensibly abandoned.'"
I don't think it was sensible to have an increase in the quota from 3 to 10 and then exempt every overseas trained player in SL in 2007 but I don't think that was the RFL's (with the support of the SL clubs) intention either. That situation only came about when challenged by Gene and he won the argument.
Quote ="G1"yet they couldn't regain the WCC, something you were very critical of last years' record breaking 3rd consecutive championship squad for not doing. Personally, i will wait and see what they actually achieve before I deem the greater than last years team.'"
Do you think Leeds have assembled a stronger squad in 2010? That's all I've said.
Whether that produces a stronger team is a seperate matter altogether and like you I will await further evidence as to whether the pieces fit together.
Quote ="G1"Will you still hold that opinion if they win nothing and will you still be critical of the strength of the record setting squad from last year? '"
Of course. The squad is I believe stronger than the one assembled in 2009. That is irrespective of what this squad go on to achieve in 2010. Leeds are not an island and their chances of retaining trophies (or adding new ones) will be affected equally by many forces beyond their control. The improvement of other squads, the quality of coaching, hunger for success (which may well be greater), a referee's decision, a video referee's decision, a bounce of the ball, fate.
As a general point are you happy to see Leeds' reliance on oversees trained increasing?

No, it was the RFLs stated intention to increase the amount of GB/England qualified players each club produced. the limits set (which haven't altered for that) are limits Leeds were and always have been exceeding. You should read the first report you've linked to. The reporter provides opinion but the direct quote from Nigel Wood emphasizes what the RFLs intention was - " There's been a long-standing objective to encourage the production of more British-qualified players".
He doesn't say it was there intention to reduce overseas players. A club could field a team with no players that it has produced itself and very few foreigners. This was all about getting clubs clubs to produce their own players. That was always the intention. Nigel Wood himself says it in the article you have linked to.
Quote Gene appealed against his classification as 'non fed trained' under the new quota system and won. '" Thanks. I'll ask, yet again, was this through the courts? Was this the court case that took the RFL by surprise that you mentioned but now seem reluctant to expand upon?

Yes that decision really bit us on the backside. Hetherington really doesn't know what he's doing. Maybe if we'd had BJB on our left wing we've got 70 eh?
Aside from the point I make above about the number of English lads playing because of us I would also suggest that BJB will have gained greater experience from his game at full back last night than he would being a passenger on our left wing as Bush was.

I agree that the RFL wished to see an increase in homegrown players. Given that there was no accompanying increase in squad sizes permissable under the salary cap regulations, that could only be achieved with a reduction in the numbers of overseas trained. The two measures go hand in hand and are clearly linked, as one increases the other decreases in years 2008 to 2011.
www.superleague.co.uk/page.php?id=346
In season 2009 and 2010 the decrease in the overseas trained quota is double the increase in the homegrown quota.
I look forward to the day when all the overseas trained that were present in SL in 2007 (and awarded exemptions after Gene challenge his classification as non fed trained) have retired/returned down under and Hetherington returns to hitting rather than missing his target.
Hetherington has a long history of promoting young British players and calling for reductions in the number of overseas trained throughout the game. That message doesn't need weakening by his own actions.

Quote ="tvoc"I agree that the RFL wished to see an increase in homegrown players. Given that there was no accompanying increase in squad sizes permissable under the salary cap regulations, that could only be achieved with a reduction in the numbers of overseas trained. The two measures go hand in hand and are clearly linked, as one increases the other decreases in years 2008 to 2011.

That message doesn't need weakening by his own actions.'" How on earth do you expect me to respond to that?
There isn't q single quote in your post.
Appalling.
Here's a thought for you TVOC. How healthy did it make our game the last time we went the whole hog and banned overseas players?

To be perfectly honest the debate had expanded to a point where even I were losing interest in it.
Quote ="G1"How healthy did it make our game the last time we went the whole hog and banned overseas players?'"
It felt OK at the time but it turned out we were watching a donkey race. The '82 Kangaroo tour demonstrated how the game should be played and it's been catch up ever since.
However as no-one has remotely argued for there being another complete ban on overseas trained players in SL I'm not sure it's a point worthy of discussion here.
The short-term overseas fix employed by anxious, impatient club chairmen and CEOs ever since '84 has had both merits and de-merits but it's always been a question of getting the balance right. The RFL have tried and tried again by lowering the overseas quota but the numbers still increase. I only hope they have more success now with the positive quotas compelling clubs to invest in their youth structures and/or seek to buy British when in the market for new players.

| The removal of the threat of relegation should help the clubs in bringing through homegrown talent.
We've only brought in one overseas player, Delaney, this year after Eastwood & Buderus last.
Compare that with Bradford who've brought in 3, Orford, L'Estrange & Hall.

Eastwood was an intended signing for 2009 but without the neccessary clearance I doubt Leeds were able to register him with the RFL at any stage that year. Without a RFL registration can he be described as a Leeds signing in 2009? Hetherington stated that Leeds weren't paying him and that his three year contract was deferred 12 months starting in 2010.
I'm no authority on Bradford playing rostas but didn't they release Jeffries, Morrison, Tadulala and Solomona to acquire Orford, L'Estrange and Hall so their 'overseas trained' position was reduced in 2010 (before the RFL blanket exemptions were applied after Gene won his appeal of course.)

I doubt Jeffries, Morrison and Tadulala count as overseas trained.
I also note Wakefield was the destination for two of those players. Wakefield were a club cited for as the catalyst for this new rule when their relegation decider contained virtually no English players.

Wakefield are getting to grips with the year on year RFL reductions (they are up to 16 players in their 25 man squad (as far as I can see) using the BBC's English born and bred yardstick.
