Free scoring centre Zak Hardaker has agreed a new five year contract extension with World Champions Leeds Rhinos that will keep the 20-year-old at Headingley Carnegie until at least the end of the 2016 Super League season.

The new deal, which includes the current season, comes after the centre has scored 13 tries in 15 appearances this season to improve a career record that has seen him score a remarkable 54 tries in just 50 senior appearances for Featherstone, Leeds and the England Knights.

Commenting on his new deal, Hardaker said, “I was really pleased when Gary Hetherington offered me the new contract and delighted to commit my future to the club. When I signed for Leeds two years ago, I was prepared to work hard for the next few years and earn my opportunity in the team however things have had happened so fast since then. There are still a lot of things I need to work on but having a long term contract gives me the confidence and time to reach my potential, it also shows me that Gary and Brian McDermott are happy with my progression and want me to be part of the club moving forward.

“Being awarded the number four squad number this year was a massive boost to me and getting so much game time this season has really helped me. Hopefully over the course of this new contract I can show the club, fans and hopefully my country what I can do,” added Hardaker.

Hardaker became the youngest Leeds player to ever win a Grand Final with the final try in last October’s win over St Helens and the fourth youngest winner in the history of the Old Trafford showpiece. He has since won a World Club Challenge winners medal and this weekend is hoping to help the Rhinos to the Carnegie Challenge Cup semi final as they face Leigh on Friday night.

He added, “Friday will be a tough challenge for us against a very good Leigh side. I know a bit more them than most of the lads having played against them for Featherstone. They are a well organised team with plenty of players with Super League experience like Rob Parker and Stuart Littler and they have some exciting players who are there on loan this season.

“Having won a Grand Final and World Club Challenge, I desperately want to go as far as possible in the Challenge Cup this year. I travelled with the team last year but missed out on selection for the Final so it would be great to get to the semi final and be eighty minutes away from getting back there but we need to improve our performance from last week if we are going to do that.

“We were disappointed with how things went at Hull as a team, credit to Hull, they produced a very good performance but we were off from where we normally expect to be and we will look to turn that around on Friday,” added Hardaker.

Commenting on the new contract Head Coach Brian McDermott said, “Zak is one of the most exciting young British players in our game and we are delighted to reward his progress so far with a new contract. He knows he still has a long way to go in his career but he has had a fantastic start and we will continue to work hard with him so he can fulfil his potential as a world class player.”

So does it mean he will also have a pay rise,or will get one after this season when certain players leave?

As Hardaker was already signed to a five year deal covering 2011 to 2015 (and was initially expected to spend the whole of 2011 back with Featherstone) my reading of the announcement is that he was probably due an upgrade and Leeds still have some cap money to allocate in 2012. That being the case it makes perfect sense to use some of that spare capacity now.

In effect it's a one year contract extension some time out in to the future for a promising work-in-progress. Nothing really to see here.

Glad he's re-signed but I'd like to see more evidence that he is beginning to understand how to set up Hall.
