| Forza Brigantes WTF?
Is this some sort of local dialect......or perhaps its the name of a particularly tasteful Wigan pie....or a new signing to replace the unlamented Tomkins Senior?
I'd go and ask, but unfortunately Wigan Dave has still not found that dummy!

What is a Brigante? I was reading a thread and it sounds like it's an arts and crafts club where they do needlework and flag making but some other fans were insinuating they're a bit more notorious than that. Apparently they have a Brigante wannabe going around doing graffiti.
It's all very interesting stuff. Life in a Northern Town eh?'"
I read that thread also, the most amusing bit was the "ultras" who have taken to wearing scarves around their faces at games.

Think we should have a sweepstake - how long will the Brigantes be around once they loose a few games and go a season trophyless?

Oh dear indeed. The Brigantes were a pre-Roman tribal grouping that actually spanned virtually the whole of northern England, with most of their substantial settlements (and capital) in Yorkshire, so there is no particular reason to connect Wigan to them over any other northern place. In fact, the north-west was pretty much a write off as far as the Romans were concerned - York was the highest ranking settlement. Hell, even Castleford was more important than Wigan.
There's some irony that this little cheer squad of theirs effectively celebrates Yorkshire dominance. I've tried to point this out on their board but they don't seem to have the wit to comprehend

Beat me to it.
Whilst Wigan is in an area that was part of Brigantium, there is scant evidence of any settlement before the Romans, so any idea of Wiganer Brigantes is, shall we say, wishful thinking.
I guess there might have been the occasional hut and hole in the ground fo't get t'coal though.

| I find it a bit poor taste that they have adopted an 'Ultra' model for a RL supporters club. They seem heavily influenced by the Italian Ultra scene (masses of flags, face covering, taking over a section of the ground and even taking the 'Ultra' name on).
What will be next? Political agendas? Flares in the stand? Demanding tickets in exchange for protection?

And what about all the money they have donated to local charities over the past year or so?
McMillan cancer and Wigan and Leigh hospice have been very grateful for their contributions.
Or does than not fit your agenda?

The BNP makes charitable donations.
Not comparing Wigan's Brigantes/Ultras to them (I do s when I type that) but it's hardly an answer to concerns people may have (many of your own fans it may seem) to say "Shut up, they give money to charity.
I give money to charity and sometimes I can be a right c**t.

I'll be his character witness to that statement.

I think it is great that you raise money for charities, and it should be encouraged by all. Well done and continue the good work.
I don't have an agenda, I just think it looks wrong that you are seen to be copying violent and corrupt groups that are associated to certain European football clubs. You must admit that from the outside the Brigantes/ Ultras can look a bit intimidating to family supporters. Especially with claiming a block to yourselves and the trend of covering faces with scarves, after all isn't that what people do to hide their identity? There are too many similarities for my liking.
I understand you had an isolated incident of a member of your Ultras defacing property in referance to the supporters club. I also understand that the individual has been reported to the right authorities, which shows the true spirit of the Brigantes. But it could be argued that the model taken from the Italian Ultras has some influence in this, and that he was only trying to impress others. Could others get the wrong end of the stick whilst trying to show off, and take more influance from the Italians?

Really easy thing to control though, it could be or probably is a condition of entry that you don't cover your face, its certainly an issue in certain conditions out on the street that can bring attention upon yourself by HM Plod.
