Two problems with that:

1. The ball clearly hits the ground first.

2. The 'half volley' only works for drop goal attempts.

Wonder what the post mortem will say? Better performance (which is what the coach wanted), but fell off badly at the start of the second half.

You have to wonder if we will beat a top 4 team (at the time we play them) at all this season. Interesting to hear Sinfield say that everyone is behind McDermott, clearly what has been said on here has got into the changing rooms at HQ.

If Mcguires no try was a drop goal attempt there is not a person in the world who would argue it should have been ruled out. Sinfield was being kind saying it could have gone either way, it was a try, pure and simple, every day of every week of every year. Mcguire kicked it.

The forward pass was forward, Tomkins should have gone for 10 but these things go against you, We had 80 mins to win the game, we didnt get the rub of the green but it is down to Leeds lack of composure at times that we lost, not Alibert.

Saying that, if any player on that field had had as poor a game as any of the officials in that game, they would be pulling on neither a Leeds nor Wigan shirt next week. Alibert simply wasnt good enough, the touch judge missing that forward pass simply wasnt good enough, Gansons decision on Mcguires try simply wasnt good enough. We desperately need to improve the level of officialdom in SL and have done for a couple of years and that comes down to one man and one man only Cummings.

So if a drop goal attempt misses it ends as a knock on then? The fact Mcguire went on to score is irrelevant to the question of whether the kick was legal or not.

Ganson f@cked up, he should be better than to make such a decision, but he did. These things happen and we move on.

We need to be more consistent between how we ref with and without the Video Ref...in a non-sky game that's a try 100% of the time - it's not like McGuire dropped the ball then reacted by trying to kick it, he went for the kick, Tomkins knocked him slightly and screwed his timing by a tiny tiny margin and now it's a knock on because the cameras were present...hmmm

Interestingly the RFL official glossary defines a knock on as "to knock the ball towards the opponent's dead ball line with hand or arm" (On that basis McGuire didn't knock the ball anywhere)

The definition of a kick is "imparting motion to the ball with any part of the leg (except the heel) from the knee to toe inclusive" (no requirement for it to be volleyed)

The fact Ganson needed to take two minutes to decide should have told what the obvious answer was. I think its clear he got caught up in answering Aliberts question (did it touch the floor before he kicked it) rather than applying the rules. Thats just poor thinking and should have been trained out of him by Cummings very easily and very quickly.

The McGuire one shouldn't even be being discussed - clear knock on. Never a half volley in a million years.

I personally think R.Hicks and Co. will get a seeing to by Cummins over the forward pass, but every game has it's fair share of forward passes and we've often been the beneficiary.

Alibert for me has gone from an inept clown to one of the best in Superleague, still not a high standard granted but he's improved non the less.

Maybe that grunt, effort and hard work is all good but it also needs to be polished with some smart play and decisions. Clutching at more straws and trying to hang McDermott with his everyword. Let's not kid ourselves refs and officials can get away with very bad games without any come back at all. All cummins will do is make excuses for them. Managers are scared to say anything against them as all that happens, even if they are right is a fine

The drop kick rule. The idea that the ball can be kicked at the exact moment it hits the floor rests only on the level of minutiae we are prepared to measure it to. As that level is undefined it is simply impossible to rule on and as such impossible to adhere to.

I know from experience that officials can and will be reprimanded for big mistakes, especially those made in front of the SKY cameras.

Like I said in another thread, I don't want to dwell on that incident because in the context of our season it does not matter a jot.

McGuire's was nowhere near simultaneous and Ganson exercised his discretion correctly.
