| Quote ="RhinoNeil"Stunning second half display from us. Had the wow factor for 40 mins.
However I cant put that first half display to the back of my mind. Why did that happen? Lets face it, Hull should have had more, Wigan, Wire & Saints would have put at least 18 on the board.'"
I think that's a little harsh to be honest, I agree with what McDermott said after the game, It's what you do when you have/don't have the momentum in RL and it would have been very easy to just fold like Hull did in the second half but we didnt.
McGuire was terrible but it was only stupid handling mistakes we were making and at least McGuire was putting himself about and getting in the right positions at the right times, even though Hull were by far the better side in the first half on another night with another ref it could have been 6 - 6 at half time.
I think we need to be more positive about the 80mins and not dwell on the first half alone, we were under some enormous pressure and came out only 12 down even though we couldn't complete a set or get the slightest bit of momentum behind us.

| Quote ="Sal Paradise"My point about Burrow is it appears it is either him or Sutcliffe that gets selected - if Sutcliffe is the future is his only chance of getting selected when someone gets injured? By the time Burrow came on the game was over, Hull were finished. He played well and given how both half backs played in the first half especially McGuire nobody could have objected if either had been substituted for Burrow.
On Kylie - McDermott wasn't keen on introducing him when they really needed some impact in the first half, by the time he did come on he did an American i.e. turn up when the war was won. Even Peacock looked a different animal in the second half from the first.'"
Kylie came on with the score 12 apiece so, as with America, the war was not won when they joined the fray and had he not made such a good impact along with others as Leeds stepped up the pace then we could still have lost. He replaced Singleton who had made the difference after half time and maintained the momentum with some good carries and scored a try. Difficult to see what he did wrong and he was introduced at the right time IMO. The coach deserves praise too for not panicking when things were not going our way in the first half and for getting the players to up the tempo and give the ball some air in the 2nd half.
With regards to Sutcliffe if he is to be the future then he has to prove it and command a place on merit. To suggest we reduce the competition for places and pick Sutcliffe by default would be a major error both for his sake and for the team. Burrow still is one of our best attacking weapons and still has a major role to play in the team. All the players should win their places on merit but sometimes you have to make a selection between players with equal form then it is understandable if the coach picks the one with proven experience.
IMO the game changed because we came out in the second half with a determination and attitude to take the game to Hull. It was this and some sublime rugby skills that won the day and not weak defense from Hull. We would have made most defenses look weak in the second half.

| We were helped tremendously by Hull's bizarre decision to take Leon Pryce off at half time and not replace him with anyone.

I'm just keeping level headed and not getting carried away. We were terrible in that first half and I'm not letting an outstanding 2nd half paper over that. Trying to score on every play and playing very dumb rugby. Constantly on the ropes, due the penalty count, but when we got the ball back instead of grafting for 10 mins we forced it and invited more pressure, that is not what you expect with the experience we have. Fingers crossed that was a one off and the real Leeds is the Leeds of the 2nd half. Like I said, I'll sensibly reserve judgement until next week vs Wire.

| At half time I was spitting feathers but consoled myself that last week the Giants came back from 18 nil down.
As JC said we were not that far behind in the first half. They had only scored 2 tries, one from a kick scored by a 6'5" stand off vs a 5'10" opponent, the other after a scrum wrongly awarded to them. So despite much more possession largely gifted by us they weren't exactly ripping us to shreds.
My worry was how much had we taken out of ourselves by having to defend for such long periods.
The way to deal with that was to deny them possession in the 2nd half which was precisely what we did.
I'm struggling to recall 40 minutes of rugby in which we were so dominant & attacked so brilliantly with pace & precision.
If that is how we're going to play then the crowds should roll in.
Here's hoping.

| Well painful as it was for us, I can only say well done to your guys for a terrific display of rugby. At half time I felt quietly confident, 5 minutes into the second half knew it was all over. I think Pryce was taken off because of an injury. I'd noticed him having treatment on the field earlier.

| The game was won after 5 minutes into second half when a Singleton inspired Leeds (set one up and scored one). Hull were shot after that and there was only going to be one winner.
That game tells you all you need to know about the character of both teams.
Some players copied the game, tale of 2 halfs. Wasn't working for mcguire in 1st, but everything stuck in second. similarly Wards silly penalties in 1st half were bettered by great leg drives with ball in hand and another impeccable defensive stint.

As bad as we were 1st half in attack, our defence was very good overall, although our failure to control the PTB at times is worrying.
Hull had more ball and territory in the first half than we did in the 2nd and given the fact that we had to make 100 more tackles than Hull in the first half it makes our 2nd half performance look even better.
Re: Kyle. I thought he had his best game of the season so far and along with all the substitutes provided good impact off the bench, however, I'm not sure Kylie or Singleton would've been given as much game time had Peacock not been injured.
Re: Burrow and Suttcliffe. To be honest I think if Sutcliffe doesn't start then he probably shouldn't be in the 17 at all, bringing him on for 10 minutes isn't going to do anything for his development as a HB so he'd be better off going to Hunslet and playing 80 minutes. However, I'd like to see him get some time at 6 in place of Sinfield at some point this season.
Burrow is still one of the most dangerous players in this country, and he did provide an impact last night and was a big reason why Leeds put Hull away. I still think we'd be better going with Aition for 80 minutes and having another forward on the bench, but Burrow was excellent.

Some good points - I agree in the most part with your first paragraph. The point about Sutcliffe is how does he ever get a chance to cement a place when he get ten minutes here 15 minutes there and then gets dropped. Sinfield has been largely ineffective in the four games so far so his selection is based on loyalty, not a bad thing but how does Sutcliffe get an extended run to cement a place?
The top teams would not have conceded 40+ points to us in 40 minutes - Hull's defence was abject holes everywhere. We were superb but we would not have blown Wigan/Saints away to the same degree.

Now you may well have a good point for Sutcliffe to play at 6 but your comment Sal was to question Burrow being chosen ahead of Sutcliffe which was why I took issue. Sinfield for much of last season and the start of this season has been a shadow of himself and there is a good case for giving Sutcliife time in his place. However Sinny is too good a player to write off too soon and his goal kicking and game management alone can still win us matches.

| Suttliffe and McGuire were impressive in the pre season games they played together and if we're going to go with a new HB partnership at some point then that's the way to go IMO, although can we afford to go into games against the better teams in the league without a goal kicker with an 80+% success rate? Especially when the likes of Wigan and Saints are struggling in this area.

| Hard to see Sutcliffe being picked except as a sub unless one or more of McGuire, Sinfield or Burrow are injured.
Possibly he should be used to sub Ward to ensure he doesn't burn himself out.
I can see both Burrow & Sutcliffe being in the 17 against the smaller teams - Wakefield for example - I mean smaller in terms of pack size.
We will incur injuries at some point in the season so Sutcliffe will get his chance down the line as he did last year.
It will be interesting to see who gets "rested" when Delaney is match fit if we have a fully fit squad at that time.
Hull decimated by injuries yet again, they need to question their fitness regime & conditioning staff.
It happens every year to them it seems.

I agree with this. If I was the coach when it comes to reviewing the match, instead of making the players watch the full 80 minus I'd make them watch the first 40 mins then rewind it and make them watch it again.
Whilst we deserve some praise for tightening up in defence as the first half wore on, against better teams we would've found ourselves further than 12 points behind at halftime. Also we won't face such a awful pitiful defensive effort in the 2nd half like the one Hull put up.
One problem is in the first half when we got the ball we tried playing like we did in the 2nd half.....throwing it around trying to be adventurous but when the opposition defence isn't tired and is rushing you and your guys have just done a big spell of defending then it can end up looking as sloppy as it did first half. As good as the attacking play was in the 2nd half you realistically can't/shouldn't try play like that for the full 80 mins imo. Sometimes you've got to wait until the other side tires for that stuff to come off for you.....remember the end of the Widnes match when they were dead on their feet.
Our fitness levels have looked really strong so far and we looked like we could've played for another 20 mins easily last night and kept producing that kind of play. In the past we were very strong at finishing games and you felt if scores were tight around 50/60 mins that Leeds would step up and win it in the final quarter. We slowly started to fail to do that recently but if we can get back to that it would be great.
On the Sutcliffe debate. If he'd have been on the bench last night he'd have probably come on and looked good and scored a try or two as well such was the dominance of that 2nd half. However whilst the argument is that he needs to be getting game time if he's the future......yes I can understand that, but you've got to pick a team for the present, not for 2/3 years time.

| Think we are being a bit harsh on the team here IMHO
We were obviously playing to some sort of "instructions" and yes we didnt quite hit it off first go but having said that we turned around at HT only 12-0 down and the second six points for them was a very fortunate rub of the green for Hull.
By and large our defence first half was good enough to keep us in the game and our fitness levels after the break allowed us to hit the straps and ball in hand that was some of the best off the cuff rugby I have seen for a long tome.
We are in danger of bcomeing like the moaning pie eaters. Lets give credit were its due. Our so called old men took up the challenge and led the charge in the second half with some awesome defence and yardage and the young guns followed their lead.
McGuire didnt try and hide after an early disasterous spell. He took the bit between his teeth and played Pryce off the park second half.
Burrow came on and did his Beep Beep to finish them off.
Looking forward to next week.

Again carrying on from the other games this season, the pleasing aspect and what stands out for me is how everyone is contributing. We turned things around as a team (granted one or two came up with key moments to stand out like Singleton and Watkins) instead of just relying/turning to the same 4/5 guys to turn it around.

What do they class as an assist? I notice we have 4 from last night:
Singleton - for McGuire's try
McGuire - assume for Singleton's try but no credit for Watkins
Watkins - assume for McGuire's try
Hardaker - assume for Burrow's first
Why does Mags not get a second assist for the ball that put Watkins in the clear for his try and especially why does Burrow not get one for Kylie's when that was a lovely bit of acting half back play?

Because on both there was still work to do from the player with the ball. Watkins try wouldn't have been scored had it not been Watkins, so you can hardly give an assist credit for someone just passing a ball.

| Quote ="ThePrinter"Exactly. He said that Hardaker was "nowhere near the ball".....he collided with the guy trying to catch it FFS, so clearly must've been somewhere NEAR the ball.
Having Cummings in the commentary was a novelty at first, but it's easily run its course now and just get rid. The more Brian Carney and Barrie McDermott and Jon Wells we hear the better. Whilst I don't wish him ill health and hope he recovers, it's been nice not to have Stevo commentating recently. Cummings and Clarke should go.....although to be fair to Clarke he didn't sound desperate for the opposition to beat Leeds tonight....he must hold a serious grudge against Hull then I'm guessing.'"
I used to defend Eddie but his commentary is just getting worse and worse. Time for a change when you've got people like Wells & Carney who can be professional and talk sense.
Had to chuckle when Eddie realised Saints wouldn't be top tonight due to points difference. On Wednesday when Saints were top due to points difference they were 1st and Leeds were 2nd. Now that Leeds are top due to points difference suddenly it's joint top.

| Only 2 positives from the first half imo were that we only conceded 12pts and the H/T hooter.
However the 2nd half was us at our attacking best playing at pace and punching holes all over their defensive line.
The highlight for me in the 2nd half was that the game was turned in our favour with players like Singleton and Ward leading the charge which the Team responded to and not having to rely 1 or 2 individual moments of magic.
Whilst the errors and cheap penalties were annoying in the first half for me our decision making was shocking ,yes Hull were faster and put us under a lot of pressure but there's more than enough nous in us to make better calls imo and i hope it's addressed asap.

However whilst the argument is that he needs to be getting game time if he's the future......yes I can understand that, but you've got to pick a team for the present, not for 2/3 years time.'"
Some valid points - on the last one, no successful organisation lives in the present to grow it has to invest in the future. If all the players were playing at a high level then it is difficult to justify change. Integrating youngsters can have some real positives as this golden generation have proved.

| Still far too early in the season for everyone to be getting their knickers in a twist. We are top of SL after 4. Will be a while before the league starts to sort itself out. Think we have done well to remain unbeaten after not playing particularly well. This is always a good sign.

| I thought that your second half performance was worthy of any NRL side as it was that good
I am now going to be sick for praising the Whino's
