| Quote ="El Diablo"Additinally, however frustrated you may get with a referee, there is no excuse for dissent from a professional player. It isn't tolerated when I play at pub league level and it certainly shouldn't be at this level.'"
You can't compare the two levels - I'm sure most pro players have never been shot at on the field of play.
I can remember playing at Leeds Sunday League level and turning up for a game against Queens A (who had been putting 60 points on everyone each week), and being told by a former Grade One match official not to worry as "you won't get nilled here lads".
Needless to say the first time we got into a kickable position he pinged them for offside right in front of the posts.
Last time we scored in that particular game, but it does demonstrate that even experienced referees can allow human emotion (in this case, pity) to determine the way they handle a game.

It is taken from where the offence occurs.... don't get that, what if he had kicked to ball away on purpose when he was out of play at the back of the field for instance... where do you give the penalty from then?
I would probably rather have the tap, you always run the risk of not making touch and I know the kick is optional by why take a tap further back when you can have it on the 20?
If the rule said a penalty from the 20 it would make sense, don't you think?

| Quote ="Andy Gilder"You know what, I've just checked the 2004 version of the International Laws of the Game, and under Section 15 the delaying of a 20 metre restart is misconduct and as such can be punished by a penalty to the non-offending team where the offence occurs.
So Ganson could have penalised Snitch at the point on the field where he touched the ball as well as binning him.'"
Is this one of the occasions where the international laws differ from the laws we play under? IIRC at that time you could take a quick 20m restart, a la Mark Calderwood, but we were never allowed to do that at international level.

Unfortunately that is not the case on a few occassions.
I dont know about other teams. But Russell Smith made a joke out of the fact how much he hated Leeds. And John Holdsworth let many a people know round Kippax how much he disliked Leeds and loved to officiate them.
Of course it would be unfiar to tarnish other good refs with the same brush, who are simply nothing like these two.'"
We may not live in an ideal world, but do you really believe that Steve Ganson referees the way he does because he's got it in for Leeds? Or was it that we persist in committing the same offences after we've been pinged for them a couple of times already?
In either event, the one guarantee I can make is that dissent after the decision will certainly not make the sitation any better and is quite likely to make it worse. Players have to either keep their tempers in check or accept that they'll be punished when they can't.

10 metres into the field of play, 10 metres in from the touchline IIRC.

So why did Ganson make a lifting gesture when marking the position for the penalty kick?

I agree on seeing the replay. Didn't look such a bad call at full speed though to be fair.

True enough.
It was one those where you have to shrug and accept it.
... and you're spot on about the dissent as well.
Ganson loves to penalise for dissent and does so at the slightest provocation ... any player who doesn't realise that must be thick.
IMHO, that's why he penalised Burrow that time for raising his arms, Ganson interpreted that as dissent, yet never penalised James Lowes for it even though it was almost his trademark.

Drew certainly did milk that one.
As for Ganson judging by what he saw ... he was facing away from the "offence" when it happened.

Arghh, ok Andy, so the rules do cover this situation then. But still think a tap on the 20 is best option in most cases I feel.

Wasn't that the game at home against Hull, and if so, wasnt it the same match as the infamous "elephant" penalty?

Yup.
Was it the same year as the phantom knock-on that gave Wigan field position for a last minute winning drop goal that was punted over the bar?

It was against Hull (10 - 10 draw) and it was the same year as the other two (2003).
No wonder Daryl Powell went grey that season what with Steve Ganson and Russell Smith to contend with.

I was in the middle of a stay in hospital at the time and they let me out for the game. It was also my birthday.
Trust good old Steve to ruin it.

FA Cup final day as well from memory, Arsenal V Southampton. I remember coming to break you out of the hospital for the game, back in the days when I used to drive to/from games.
