| Quote ="G1"So, the mark of a "top notch play maker" is one who is automatically selected for England is it.
In which case you really back up your argument with.........................
Lee Briars(sic). Great example shag. Do tell me about how many rep jerseys Lee Briars(sic) has earned in comparison to Sinfield? This is, I am afraid, one of those occasions where you are, of course, entitled to express your opinion but, gee whizz, you really shouldn't be allowed to, for your own safety.'"
Gareth you don't read the posts properly - Briars will not get selected because the rest of his game is not upto scratch especially his tackling. The point is not about Sinfield's other qualities but whether he is a top notch playmaker - How many games as he played as playmaker for GB/England? The examples given are the ultimate playmakers in the game - you and RR maybe believe Sinfield is as good as Benji Marshall that is your entitlement - but before you scorn others you should first follow the thread

| Been having a discussion with a Bulls supporting colleague at work today about how pivotal Sinfield has been to Leeds success in recent years, which in his opinion wasn't an awful lot.
For me, what he brings to the side isn't always obvious in terms of big hits, clean breaks or tries. He's an intelligent player who reads game situations well (his drop goal and the tap back to Jones-Bishop at Hull being recent examples). He sets the tone for the side with his workrate, a lead by example captain rather than a shouter who knows how to get the most out of those around him.
In short, someone who - if he wants to and applies himself to it properly - has all the makings of going on to become a very good coach.

| I can't believe we're even discussing whether or not Sinfield is pivotal for the club.
I can't believe that there's even a debate. I'm beginning to wonder if there's another Sinfield that plays in the reserves and he's the one that's signed a new deal.
Easily in the top 5 greatest Rhinos players OF ALL TIME signs a new contract extension and we take it as an opportunity to criticise his ability as a playmaker. I don't wonder we get called the 'Whinos'.

Correct.
I'm glad you qualified that statement with the insertion of "Rhinos" though.
Otherwise you'd be wrong.

You do make me chuckle Keith!!
If you want to cut your nose off to spite your face then so be it.
Granted, there's a certain amount of pantomime to the Rhinos suffix but IMHO that's not a reason to dislike it. I understand the irony of 20,000 overweight, balding, sweaty men chanting affectionately at a 6ft furry Rhino but hey, that's life. Just because something is mass market and "branded" it doesn't necessarily make it any less of a good product.

You are obsessed with age and Leeds ageing.
But just off topic a sec our backs next season might well be a combo of bjb smith watkins hardacker hall with mags and burrow in the halves.
quickest backline in the league by a mile

Bit harsh on Sal there, at least he/she is being honest (even though I wouldn't agree with his/her sentiments). I can imagine a scenario, possibly in 2 or 3 years, where some of those posting their support for Sinfield are calling for him to be replaced by someone with greater speed, ball-handling skill etc while totally disregarding everything he's brought to this club.

This is a discussional message board not a religious commune - hence the diversity of opinions, for you the sacred cow is beyond critic but to some of us we are able to see beyond the hero worship.
You are entitled to your opinion - it would be a boring board if we all agreed with each other?

I can imagine that scenario too. We've seen it already over the years, we don't have to wait 2 or 3 years.

| Happy news. Cheered me up no end when I read it stuck on a train for 2 hours outside Derby last night. Sinfield (or Sir Kevin as I constantly irritate my wife by calling him) is, in my opinion, easily Leeds' greatest player of the Super League era. Comparing players from different eras is difficult, so I'm not much interested in "best ever" discussions, but in terms of contribution to the Leeds club, whatever name it was under at the time, I think he deserves to be considered "among the greatest ever" in the club's history, along with some of the leading lights of the past.
Interestingly, in view of some above discussion, if (big if) his body was no longer up to the job, would anyone really want to see him keep being selected if he wasn't any longer the best man for the job, based on his past contributions? I wouldn't and I doubt he would either. Fortunately, because of the type of player he is - he isn't speedy, he's rarely particularly flashy - I can't see any reason he can't keep going for 4 more years yet at least, so I doubt (injuries permitting) it will be an issue.

Neither would I, although that's a different point to the one that I was making. What I was alluding to was that Sinfield may not be the quickest, or the greatest ever ball-player, rather that his contribution cannot be measured in these terms alone. However, it's a cert that there will be some fans who will come to see these "deficiencies" as out-and-out grounds for replacing him ridiculously prematurely.
