Terrible news John Holmes was a fine stand off one of the best I have ever seen forget all the overrated Aussies JH had class to burn

awful news, I can remember his debut ,16yrs old against Hunslet,I think, in the Lazenby Cup, kicked about 10 goals.
So upset when Shoey died and I feel the same today

RIP John.......one of my two favourite Leeds players, the other being Lewis Jones.
I remember early in John's career standing next to Lewis who was a spectator behind the posts urging john not to try to do too much himself and let the ball do the work. He wouldn't have heard those comments during those formative times, but, my goodness how he did make the ball do the work in the rest of his time.
His ability to see openings for others, which I did not see, and the opposition did not see and then to time the pass to perfection was sheer genius which i cannot see ever being replicated. A true great of the game, and sportsman of the highest order.
I am truly saddened and hope the club in the Super League era give due recognition to John' memory through some lasting memorial.

This is terribly sad news. He was without doubt my boyhood hero growing up and watching Leeds standing in the old Paddock in the 1970s.

John was a majestic player, one of the very greatest to have graced the game of rugby league. Let's hope there is a lasting memorial to him.

He won you the 1978 Challenge Cup Final with his passing in the second half.

At one time I think he held the record for most points by a GB player in an international (against NZ in 1972 World Cup).

As a youngster I use to think he looked like John Alderton off Please Sir.

RIP John, my grandad says he was one ofb the greatest, I'm not going to argue with that.

Rest in peace John. Was not privelleged enough to see you play in the flesh, just slightly before my time, but your deeds and actions will allways be remebered by those who did get to see you play in the blue and amber and im sure the whole of the rugby league family will mourn you for the great that you were and still are.

One of the finest players Iv`e seen, a great individual as well as a team member. RIP.

Despite never getting to see this player live he entertained a generation of Leeds fans. A sad day for the club whole round. My sympathies goes to his acquaintances, friends and family.

R.I.P. Condolences to all who knew him

I watched the great man throughout his career and can only echo much of what's been said - an outstanding and gifted player both in attack and defense and as tough as teak taking more punishment off the ball than any player I have ever seen.

An absolute legend has passed away.

John Holmes was silky smooth who took his fair share of abuse from the opposition who stopped his play at any cost. We could tell when they had got him as he started to pass the ball sooner.

A real credit to the Leeds Rhinos in a fitting tribute on the website.
