I'll give it another chance then but in the rarified atmosphere of my memory banks the only decent sit-coms to come out of the sixties were those that starred Sid James.
And Steptoe.
And Alf Garnett

Not far off, it was early seventies.
Anyone remember Barrie Rutter in it as "Our Douglas"?

You're thinking of The Plaza which is the one in the picture LS16_Rhino linked to. The one you've linked to is what went on to become Mr Craigs.

| Towards the end of its life The Plaza showed films of a raunchy nature, but of the "X" rating rather than the unrated ones that the filthmongers house attached to The Queens Hotel did (the News Theatre in the Leodis links) - that was a "private members club" which showed proper filth, a bit like the "private members club" we had to pay to join at a Soho venue on the Friday night before the 77 CC final - all that to watch a Mary Millington film "Come Play With Me" which you can now almost see on CeeBeebies
Of course, a big boy told me all this stuff you know, a good Methodist like me would not dare to haunt such venues, no really.

When the Plaza building was put up for sale a friend of a friend was interested in buying it to convert it into a snooker club.
Think about the necessary slope built in to cinemas and then think how that might effect a game of snooker ...

| Anyone of enough vintage to have visited the Mecca rolling skating rink on Kirkstall Road?
Now part of YTV my dad used to bring me here on weekends, late 60's early 70's to watch him re-live his youth. The pinball machines and table football were fantastic.

The Roller-rena ?
I remember when it was a short lived ice skating rink
When it changed to roller skating we actually managed to persuade our school sports teacher that it was a "proper" sport and he let small groups of us go on the bus there instead of not wanting to play cricket with him and the rest of the class.
I can still smell the roller skates though - how rank were they ?
And the only song they seemed to play was "Blockbuster" by The Sweet

What an excellent piece of social history, especially the comments below it.
One of my memories of being in pubs in Newcastle in the 1970's is sitting at a table in the tap room with piles of five pound notes in the ashtray in the middle, all riding on a game of poker, said poker school taking place underneath an "official" sign that read something like "Wagers limited to one farthing"

These gentlemen will have all been working class folk yet each one of them is donning a suit. Now how many blokes do you know that wear a two piece socially?
It’s not only what we did that changes its how we did it too.

Thats so true, I can't recall any other form of clothing for my fathers generation than a suit, not just for work, but for every day.
For casual wear through the day you'd often see the suit trousers being worn with a cardigan but jeans were strictly for teenagers, you never saw a "man" in jeans, the thought of such a thing is outrageous.
Blue overalls would be worn by the sort of man in the street who loved tinkering with his motorbike but the only time that I ever saw my dad NOT wearing his suit was when we went on holiday to Scarborough and he adopted his pair of cream coloured "slacks" and a heavy red woolen pullover.
Ive rambled on a bit about terraced houses today, [url=http://jerrychicken.wordpress.com/2008/07/22/the-back-to-backs/right here[/url

Well observed.
If such things interest you, you might take a look at [i"Queuing for Beginners: The Story of Daily Life from Breakfast to Bedtime"[/i by Joe Moran. Newly released in paperback it contains some fascinating insights into 'everyday' life.

Book arrived this morning and I opened it at a random page and read the word ‘bagsied’. Any author that uses bagsied gets the thumbs up from me.

Indeed ... whenever you see footage of big sporting events from, say, before WWII or even the early 1950's, virtually all the men are wearing headgear of some sort even if it's just a flat cap.
When did that stop?

I can hear the opening stanza now ...
