There's a site about skyscrapers around the world which has a specific forum about Leeds. It's populated by architects and civil engineers and town planners etc as well as 'ordinary' people who have an interest in a particular city. My info came from there where it's accepted that the building is BWP.
The site's down at the moment doe some kind of maintenance but here's a link anyway ...

I used to deliver newspapers to the houses in the background of that photo. In fact, I've been past that very spot on the No. 56 just his afternoon.
The picture did remind me of something that have disappeared to a large extent (if not completely), Telegraph Poles. When did they go?
And no Arnold Rimmer jokes please. It was one of the worst ever gags in Red Dwarf.

| Telegraph Poles? Sounds like an Eastern European T-Rex covers band.
Still go in The Victoria on reunions from where I used to work, decent enough beer, plenty of room, music not too loud - everything an old git like me needs in a pub.

Don't know, but I've seen quite a few pairs of trainers thrown over telegraph wires. Mind, that was in Batley.

I think you’re missing the point here Flipper mate.
This thread is about nostalgic photos and reminiscing about old times.
You have posted a picture of Burley as it is today..!!

Can you honestly say that the Burtons building that replaced this one on the Headrow was an improvement on the original ?

It says that building was on Brigatte, not the Headrow. I'm assuming it's towards the bottom end, surprisingly where the Burton Arcade is now, with Burger King, etc at the bottom.
Your point still holds though.

My launderette is now in that shop front on the left of the picture.

I'm just waiting for the wrath of the historians when Burtons start wanting to tear down bits of the Hudson Road site. Not sure whether any of that has any listed status or preservation orders on it...

| The skyscraper site I linked to earlier in this thread is up and running again now.
This link should take you straight to the Leeds forum ...

There's lots of interesting stuff for anyone interested in photos and/or history of Leeds.

| Lived briefly in a building owned by Opal (see the Skyscraper forum link).
In future I'd have a blanket policy of refusing any application from them. No discussion, just a refusal. Ruining the city with their unimaginative student housing.
Is that style of construction the best we can do? Do we need any more f***ing students in Leeds? At this rate there'll be more people studying than working, already ruined Headingley.
I'd ban all soulless, generic brick 'towers' for the foreseeable future. If the 'city fathers (and mothers)' really want Leeds to stand out, why not go for radical building styles? Why not copy buildings from the past? Insist on refurbishing rather than knocking down and re-building? They'll bleat about cost, tough! The stuff they build isn't worth anything anyway!
Rant over!!!!

They tried to do that with the Spiracle on the International Pool site, but unfortunately the developers have withdrawn...
