One of the memories I do have is of James Whale telling us all she'd be out in about 5 minutes, every 5 minutes, for about an hour. Those who weren't from Leeds around me were not exactly impressed by him, especially as they didn't have a clue who he was!

Wouldn't have got it without the clue.

Used to love listening to James Whale under the covers on a school night (the call in bit).

Avoiding the obvious pun, the first bit of Whale's show (10-11) which featured music was hardly listened to by anybody, it was only when the local nutcases came on after 11 that people tuned in.

One lad I went to college with was a regular at the studios. Apparently he ran away from home one night, his mum got Whaley to put an on air appeal out, he ended up at the studios and after that became a regular visitor.

When Whale did his last show on Radio Aire I went down to the studios with him and we spent the entire show in the studio with him, together with a number of other "regulars".

the market share of audience that show got at that time of night, were and still are ridiculous.

There's no better show on any radio station (but particularly local radio) than late night phone-ins.

Correct, he was doing the late night stint when I moved to Newcastle in 1977, I've driven home ratd many a time paying more attention to his "guests", who were only marginally more p1ssed than I was, than the road.
