Bottom left of that photo in City Square is what looks like some kind of subway entrance – can’t ever remember that being there.

I think there were underground toilets down there.

There used to be some at the bottom of Briggate, too - when it had two way traffic and pedestrian islands.

I've seen photo's of what I thought was a subway on Briggate before but don't ever recall seeing on in City Square.

Think I might get the ‘Old Photos of Leeds’ books out when I get home – I’m sure there are one or two 1930’s pic’s of City Square

Have a look at the photos for yourself, quite similar to todays estate TBF, ie huge areas knocked flat and nowt much going on.


Stanks drive is only 1/2 completed on those photos and the entire penwells and ash trees and langbars are yet to be built. most of the flats arnt on those early photos either but then again we knocked them all flat about 5 years ago so the old photos have come full circle.

TBF they are trying to improve Swarcliffe what with all the barratt developments and rumors of a new <gasp!> set of shops.

I used to go trainspotting to Leeds Central when I was a kid in the 1950s. My memory might be playing tricks but I seem to recall that you could get nearer to the locos without buying a platform ticket than you could at Leeds City.

There was a certain ambience about the place too, that Leeds City lacked.
