I'd imagine in the view of the judges he improved the playing ability and standards of the squad at his disposal more than any other SL coach did with their charges.

As such I imagine Michael Maguire will be the leading candidate so far this season.

Yes I'd imagine so.

Nathan Brown took Huddersfield from a 10th place finish in the regular rounds in 2008 to a 3rd place finish in his first season - a record improvement for any club in the SL Era. Their defence conceded 265 points fewer taking them from 5th in 2008 to 1st in 2009 for best defence. On the points scored stat they went from 7th in 2008 to 3rd in 2009. IMO he had made a strong case for consideration based on the improvements in their on field performance over the season.

Warrington's progress in the Challenge Cup was aided greatly by a favourable draw and avoiding both of the quality sides of last season's competition in Leeds and St Helens (who Huddersfield despatched) and Warrington's league position dropped from 6th in 2008 to 10th in 2009 missing the play-offs.

Smith could possibly yet have a far better claim to the award this year.



Maguire has so far, with basically the same squad + Deacon, transformed Wigan into potential challengers. It has yet to be seen whether he can take them all the way to the main prize but at this stage I'd imagine he was a leading contender for the coach of the year award based on their improvement.

Noble has done a good job with the situation he was presented with but with not much of a baseline, too many NRL experienced players and too many off weeks for him to challenge for the award this season.
