In the 98/99 season Leicester had an average crowd of just over 12,000.
Leeds was just under 14,000.
Wigan’s was 9,500.

| The point is Leicester were never one of the 'one man and his dog' RU teams like some were. They've pulled big crowds as long as I can remember. Some of the others, particularly the London clubs (Sale as well I'd guess) were more of that ilk.

Correct, they came and went (at the RL clubs at least, I don't know how much Leicester's crowds varied other than that they were similar). In the early '90s Wigan were larger than Leeds.

The success of the 2004 to 2014 Rhinos with adequate development would (IMHO) have translated the massive interest in West Yorkshire amateur Rugby Union into interest in a pro club. But as it happened Caddick admitted that owning a Union club was a hobby.
I'm sad because there are now no realistic pathways for the many hundreds of lads who play amateur Union to make a living from the game in West Yorkshire.'"
You could almost say the same about any club in any sport. Look at the crowds Bradford used to get after their successful spell regularly winning trophies. The problem is only a very small minority of clubs can be regularly successful on the field, so basing your business on that happening will fail for most.

| Imagine where you work going bust, you being made redundant yet still having a mortgage to pay and kids to clothe and feed.
As much as League fans scoff at Union - lets not forget that at the end of the days its sport and there are staff and players who have very uncertain futures.

| Was very interesting to find out that Leeds Rhinos actually loaned Yorkshire Carnegie 403k preciously. Under the CVA we will only get ÂŁ60k back (15p to the ÂŁ)

| So we hired someone under GREAT fanfare who couldn't do the job we hired him to do?
"Leeds Carnegie’s executive chairman tasked with, among other things, building relationships with businesses, sponsors and clubs across the county"
Who, also had "been the driving force behind the controversial name change to Yorkshire Carnegie" that went down like a cup of cold sick.
He's partly right that the Yawnion should have had there own marketing dept, I mean we only have one of the best marketing depts / corporate contact lists for the RL so I mean that 20% of staff time would be used to go after these delicate, unique kick and clappers non?
He's failed, he's failed big and like anyone in that position he's shifting blame onto what he see's as the "inferior code" which will be lapped up by the sycophants in the media.

| Should never have changed from Leeds to Yorkshire. Loads turned away after this. Change back to Leeds and they have a chance to rebuild. Stay as it is and it'll be dead in 4 years

| I personally don’t think they’ll be around next year when they are relegated to the third tier of unions game, especially when the crowds are low at HQ already.

| I’m sure a reasonably successful Union side could have been a benefit to the Rhinos in terms of cost sharing and profits from the facilities.
But that’s just a massive pathetic whinge from McGeechan.
If he didn’t like the arrangement then renegotiate it or pay for your own bloody staff and pay the full market rate of playing in the stadium.

| Quote ="loinertillidie"My understanding is that Hetherington got spooked by the figures. When Leeds Tykes were in the Premiership and looking to cement their stature as a club, it was explained to both Caddick and Hetherington that for the money that they were paying their International RL players they wouldn't get anyone good enough to compete in the Premiership. If they wanted to compete they had to pay the cash.
Caddick got this and was happy to go go for it, Hetherington flat refused to pay middle of the road Union players twice what World Class League players were on.
For me allowing Hetherington to have his way killed Carnegie as a club. It takes time, had Caddick persisted the Union side would be a serious brand. As it is it is failing.'"
I'm not surprised GH was spooked by the figures, they're mind bending. Two top players at many RU clubs will earn the entire SL cap. Saracens lose 2-3 million quid a year on top of a cap of 7.5 million + the extra they are allowed to spend over that for their internationals and plus all the money they were siphoning into player "businesses".
It's a shame, I agree, there must be loads of great young players who have to travel elsewhere to play.

| The wages in RU are utterly unsustainable even with their much higher income. To compete you've got to be willing and able to sustain big losses every year. Pro RU like many sports is not a 'business' in any normal sense. If Leeds saw that and backed off sobeit.

| I don't pay much attention to premiership RU, but last time I looked attendances were brutally the she as super league's. I know there are other factor's like a better TV deal, and additional income from what was the Heineken cup, but it feels like there isn't the base for all cost unless the trickle down from internationals is significant.

You're not far wrong.
Having said that Wasps were pulling over 20k per home game a couple of seasons ago after they moved to Coventry and Bath are sold out every home game -but the ground is very small. The international game though is on a different planet. I guess it's a bit like cricket in that regard.

| If Yorkshire Carnegie move away from Headingley could we see the revival of a lower league RL club playing out of Headingley? Would be great to see Bramley playing in League One on dual reg with Leeds.
