| Quote ="Inflatable_Armadillo"You have been put in your place by other posters on this, but they are indeed correct.
The Western Terrace has some major issues that make re-development (to add a roof) prohibitive both practically and financially. Major planning hurdles, a public right of way to maintain and the huge cost of actually doing the work because of those and other factors.
The pay-back period versus return in increased away support would be in excess of 25 years plus I would estimate, by some quick calcs. So the answer is currently, it is not worth it, but I understand that it will probably be the final project once the North Stand is replaced.'"
In all fairness to the fellar though, it will probably cost more in actual money for the screen than it would to put a roof up.
And when we talk about payback, where is the payback on this screen? It's great for supporters yes, but is it actually really really needed?
Of course that is working on it been straightforward, which you have quite rightly pointed out it is not. In that we would be unlikely to get planning permission to put up the roof, and other logistical problems.

I don't know how much cinemas charge to show adverts before films come on, but I would imagine there is some money to be made charging for advertising space on a giant screen that is going to be seen by 15,000 people once a fortnight.

| Quote ="Remarkable_Rhinos"The club announced a new (MUCH NEEDED) screen (hopefully with a Match Clock visible from the Southstand!!), enhancing the experience for fans with replays, redeveloping the ground a bit at a time. Not only that but they've managed to start the work when they promised they would, despite half the Country being off work with the weather, and yet our very own "FANS" still managed to somehow turn it into a negative thing....
and people wonder why we get called "Whinos"?'"
Quite right,
Its like when you go out and buy your kids a Wii for christmas (or whatever that years "must have" is) and all they do on christmas day is moan at you because you got the white one instead of the black one - line up for a slap around the back of the head and and early bedtime everyone.

How much do you think this screen is costing mate?????
I think a cool £5m would do a good job on re-developing the Western Terrace to include a roof, you might get it down as low as £3.5m to £4m at a push possibly!
I have no idea how much one of these screens cost but I bet it is maybe £500k fully installed? Big difference in cost!

I think your £500k is probably realistic, although as usual there will no doubt be add ons. I still can't see where the payback would be though.
On the roof. Come on your an architect aint you? You could put a roof on that size area for less than £100k if you are just talking materials and labour. It wouldn't look pretty I agree, but it is do able. The southstand roof only costed double that. I wasn't talking about the whole redevelopment of the stand, I was talking about the roof only, which is what the original poster (although trolling) was having the dig at.
Like I said if you are talking about actual logistics for it then the cost would go up much more, which is what you quite rightly pointed out previously.

Do you mean the membership scheme that's been going for 30 years? That membership scheme? Or the membership scheme which you now get additional benefits for the same price? How about that one?
Shouldn't you be blaming the RFL for this? After all they've obviously diverted funds intended for "worthwhile" clubs to help Leeds fund this big screen haven't they? I mean since Hetherington runs the RFL and everything.

| Good on Leeds - if you have spare cash knocking around, it's good to spend it on something that will improve your supporters' enjoyment. In a salary capped world, why not spend it on improving facilities, and Leeds have spent big in that respect recently.
Don't see why people are sniping really, I'm looking forward to seeing it.

An Architect!!!! How very dare you!!!! I am significantly more vital and important than the relatively recently invented profession of Architect... I am a Structural Engineer!
You are kidding right... £100k... that might just about cover the crane hire for the rather large mobile that will be required to lift the steel from the South Stand car park to the Western Terrace! I think you could put a lightweight roof covering (ETFE or fabric) roof covering over the current Western Terrace for maybe £1.5m, but that still leaves you with a very old terrace under a new roof.
The reality of the Western Terrace is that, like the banking of the old Eastern Terrace, it all has to come out and a complete new stand built and that is going to cost a fair few million I am afraid!

We have just built a 20000 sqft building, kitted out and with offices for just over £500k. The roof cost about £60k of it.

Agree with you, which is what would put up the cost to the figures you originally quoted, and what in reality is needed.
But the guy trolling was only talking about a roof not a new stand. And although I don't agree with that poster, he is still not wrong to question why the west stand does not have a roof.

Why would we just put a roof on?
Totally false economy. Even "just a roof" would have to go through planning, and all the relevant H&S checks if people were standing under it. You could possibly throw up a cheap, c[ir[/iap job attempt at some sort of cover for £500k but why??
There's nothing "wrong" with the western terrace, it doesn't "need" replacing. The RFL were more than happy with our facilities (IIRC we were one of only 3 "A GRADE" clubs), so what's the point in spending money to replace something when really we'd only want to do it again "properly" when the money became available.
If you're watching TV on a 19", but really you know you want a 50", you wouldn't go out and buy a 26" would you?? All it's going to do is mean it will take longer to save for the 50" that you really want. Unless the 19" is broken, just put up with it until you can afford the one you really want.

We wouldn't which is what I was saying. It makes perfect sense to go the whole hog and get the stand done properly.
But just putting a roof on could still be done for cheaper than the screen IMO, which is why I said for an oppossition supporter to question it is not entirely wrong.

| I don't understand the arguments, its simple mathematics. Spend £500k and please 80% of the paying audience or spend £1.5m plus to make 20% of the crowd happy? I think its a simple enough decision.
It was my understanding that the club had been trying to purchase the housing that's at the rear of the ground to enable them to build a bigger stand, is that correct?
