| Quote ="the exile"Not sure about my memory here but didn't this case become bit of a "cause celebre" and lead to a court case ( said my memory was hazy!) and left the RFU with an indefensible position as their players were taking boot money and they were on the verge of turning pro? Shortly after their banning of players "professionalised" ceased.'"
The Pilgrim case was discussed across the floor of the House of Commons. The one year ban the RFU placed on Pilgrim in '93 still stood though despite the sport taking a beating with regard to the shamateur status of the code from MP's on both sides, IIRC.

I don't remember Lewis Jones, as I was born in 1977, but he's hardly an obscure Leeds player!
Leeds signed Craig Innes from New Zealand RU in a blaze of glory FFS!!

| I've not read all this thread so apologies if already mentioned, Kevin Squire anyone? I seem to recall he was a curly haired second row/loose forward from the late eighties? Came from Devon or someplace like that, decent player I thought, hardworking anyway which was more than can be said for some players of that time

I seem to remember him scoring the winning try in a CC replay at Odsal mid Eighties.

I'll go with John McNeill, a reserve hooker signed from Featherstone Rovers,in the 1980's IIRC, his claim to fame was nothing to do with his playing exploits.
He did, however, steal a full sized steamroller and proceeded to run amok with it

Yup on both counts.
Also dropped a goal for Leeds in a fairly heavy defeat (Hull KR?). Not sure whether he thought at the time it was worth 3 points rather than just one...?

I saw him in the Cherry Tree pub, just off Mabgate. My girlfriend said he was a ' gorgeous hunk ' so I had the humiliating experience of taking a photo of the pair of them together. He was a friendly lad though.
remember Kevin Squire quite well, not a bad player, bit on the light side though.
think he got a knee injury and faded from the scene.

| You could reel off a list of Leeds players from the early to mid-80s (mostly produced through the Colts side) who had a handful of appearances then disappeared.
Phil Turner, Phil Owen, Mark Campbell as well as the aforementioned McNeill, Sowden and the Mackintosh twins.
