I'd already seen what Broughton had to offer from his loan spells at Hull. Like our coaching staff at the time I saw little to get excited about. In fact, my abiding memory is of that speedster Kevin Sinfield rounding him to score a try.
You do realise the can of worms you just opened?

| I once rounded Willie Poching at Headingley, but I wouldn't fancy beating him in an 80M sprint. I would have rounded you on many an occasion, but frankly I can't run that far...

| The most telling line from the YEP article r.e. Burgess is...
[i"We have always known he is ambitious to go to the NRL next year, we have absolutely no problem with that, he would leave with our best wishes. He made plain his desire to go to Australia, so we have always been planning to be without him in the longer-term."[/i
Seems pretty simple to me. If this is the "transition year" we've been constantly saying is happening, then we're transitioning to life without Burgess. Simples.
Shall we all collect our tears and ship them to Norfolk?

| Was the transition supposed to be in personel or in style?
The days of watching Kirke as a Leeds prop and Burgess out on loan can't come soon enough.

Is Burgess better than Kirke? Yes.
Is Burgess staying at the club? No.
Should we be investing time, money, resources and energy into helping Burgess improve? No.

| Fine by me. It's basic business... if an employee hands in their notice then it is highly likely that their heart and mind will be elsewhere.
You do not;
i) Give them any important jobs to do.
ii) Heap any expectation on them to deliver.
iii) Spend any time or money developing their skills.
You do;
i) Prevent them from being around other, more settled, colleagues.
ii) Remove any level of responsibility.
iii) Allow them to leave at the earliest possible opportunity.
Burgess effectively handed his notice in. It's as simple as that.

| Should we be using the contracted talents of a young impressive forward to improve our team's chances in this years SL?........YES
Should we be cutting our noses off to spite our faces, simply because he has expressed a desire to play down under?.......NO

Mate, this years Super League has long gone! And if, by some fluke, we do well in the play-offs/CC I very much doubt Burgess would've been the contributing fact to that.
We need to start building for the future, with players that want to be involved in that future.

I know but I haven't been aound much recently so have missed what's been going on.
I see both you and tvoc are willing to continue the old debate, I was just wondering if you had mellowed towards tvoc's position on internal vs external recruitment.

Agreed, the SL looks very much a lost cause, but the CC is still on the cards. But you don't help the cause by letting a very good and improved young player take up a spot at a potential rival, without having a better replacement in the offing. Perhaps GH has, and we will all be applauding his fine business acumen. Until then, for me at least, there's a question mark over his current asset/man management skills.
In Burgess's case I would disagree about his level of commitment. He's shown some good form this year, and is desperate to be in the shop window if he's going to get a gig in the NFL. He is going to be performing right up to the day he signs on that contract, and I would rather it was for us than anyone else.
Promoting young players is fine by me. If there good enough...they're old enough! So far though, that's more aspirational than reality at HQ.

Did we stop working with Gareth Ellis when he said he was off to the NRL - No - did it bring results yes I think we won the GF in his last year!!!

| Quote ="finglas"Disagree, burgess loaned out frees up cap space. He could be brought back if needed. Him and Cross out ensures space is there to bring someone in in an area where more cover is needed. Given the long-term injuries and Seniors age I reckon a centre is probably in the offing. Either that or the Carnegie relegation means a tighteningg of belts if they want to keep together the guts of a squad that can get promotion.'"
I would be very concerned if we are tightening our belts to secure a ru team that has about 2 fans and will never take off.

| Quote ="Andy Gilder"If Luke Burgess wants to go to Australia and isn't really that bothered about whether he plays in the NRL or in some semi-pro lower grade, what's to stop him (visa conditions not withstanding)?
Irrespective of whether Leeds have or haven't offered him a new deal or not, in the age of freedom of contract all the leverage lies with the player. If he decides the grass is greener somewhere else, there's sod all the club can do about it once his contract is up.
I can't see how anyone can seriously argue that isn't the case?
What we've got here is two players on the fringes of the first team who have been told they can go elsewhere to get first team rugby. Excuse me if I don't regard it as some major disaster from which the club will never recover.'"
Agree with the last paragraph. Well put my only concern would be if mac has made these decisions and will be here next year

| Some Quins fans held the view that if for any reason a player crossed Mac they'd be out. Despite living with a Quins fan I was never convinced of the argument, but I'm afraid this does convince me.
TS & Bluey seemed to be able to manage players who'd declared their intentions to move to other clubs in SL, NRL and even the other code. Ellis, Scruton and Smith come to mind and we won grand finals with them playing their final game as Rhinos.
I don't have strong views about Cross going (Mac seemed to make it clear from day 1 he wasn't keen on the signing) but Burgess going out on loan is ridiculous and just provides more evidence that Mac isn't up to the job as Head coach.
Perhaps Burgess can blow up and burst a rubber glove in one breath and Mac hasn't mastered the art yet!

| I think burgess leaving is dissapointing but it has been on the cards for a long time, don't really see why he has to be loaned out, should easily be in the 4 top
Props at our club

| It appears as though we are trying to free up cap space for this season, which either means we've got a signing lined up or somebody has messed up and we run the risk of going over the salary cap if both Burgess & Cross continue to play.
Or it's terrible man management.
If it's a signing it better be good to risk this kind of disruption, although it's been obvious that there's been something with Cross for a while.
