It was Leeds and Doncaster's third game of the season rather than opener. Leeds and Donny were both undefeated before the match.

You proved to me that my old neighbour did infact take part in the game, i didn't know whether to believe him or not as he only made a handful of appearances for Donny

And he spelt my Uncles name right too, which can be more than said for the official match video, who had a 'B.Carlisle' at 7 that day...

Anyone remember Steve Pilgrim? He was a good RU player who Leeds offered a trial, to be fair he looked quite good but Leeds said no. Trouble was the RFU got wind of it and banned him from their code so he was left well & truly in the ......

looking @ the sides widnes were pretty much full strength.
was sure mark massa & wayne heron played but heselwood was largely a centre, wilkinson mainly a fullback, binder hardly played as did mitchell, & sykes & armitage must have been young.

2 other archive matches a semi final @ fartown i think against won 8-2 on penalties with conway chosen ahead of dick to play gregory.

And a home match against hull in the days they filled the south stand. Think we were losing by a point when heselwood put dick through & he really seemed to ttake a dive to get a match winning penalty.

Chapy was a centre/winger. Signed under Dean Bell I think, good junior went to Silcoates School Wakefield for a while, never had the attitude to make it as first team player despite great promise.

My God thats a name from the past... Dave was very much in the Big Roy Dickinson mould IIRC

IIRC as well he was signed from the Leeds Intermediates (U19s)

Calvin Wilkes also springs to mind as a very obscure signing as well for around that era

also Paul Pickup...... a relative of Fred IIRC

Something similar happend to Phillis Ford's brother, Steve Ford ...He came up from Welsh RU and played a game on the wing.

Leeds said no, but by then his name was well known as to who he really was.

Played a couple of games on trial for Salfard ... Including one AGAINST Leeds.

IIRC, given that he had quite a decent Cardiff RU career after turning out for Leeds, he was one of the first RL players to be allowed back in to Union.
