| What a good side Widnes are this year. Deserved winners over Wigan. Also what a good attacking fullback is Hanbury.

| fair play to Widnes i expected them to get their bubble burst tonight but they played well and fully deserved their win. Still early days but it looks safe to say they will be in the 8.I still have my reservations on them being contenders, or could they do a leicester City?.....

| I can almost taste the excitement among Whinos fans at this Wigan loss - dressed as Widnes winning, of course. Proper Loiners suffer nightmares over Widnes in the past though, not Wigan.

Not sure how deep their squad is but the signings of whipping boy NRL rabble like Runciman, Thompson and Houston is clearly helping to bear some fruit.

| Widnes are only showing what a difference it makes to a team, to have two quality half backs. With that you can play to the strengths of your other positions, regardless of what quality they are.

Mellor a quality halfback? Brown is overrated as well, look at the kick out on the full when leading by 6, risking it then was pointless and he could have lost his team the game, top halves wouldnt do that
Widnes were good but Wigan, like all the top teams this year (except Wire), have limped out of the gate, I think Widnes may be feeling the benefit of an early CC exit and games against Championship opp last year, giving them some reserves coming into this season
You only need about 20 points to make the top 8 so they are virtually nailed on already, whether they can do better will be shown by about the Magic Weekend

| Widnes are playing good attractive attacking rugby with plenty of creativity coming from the halves and fullback. They also have a good attitude and work rate and against Wigan just refused to lay down when the pressure was on. In fact it was Wigan who lost it mentally in the last quarter. If they lose key players to injury it could upset their momentum as the season progresses but the way they are playing is good for SL.

| I think Wigan are missing Tomkins/Bowen. Even though Bowen wasn't as impactful as Tomkins, he still often caused chaos in defences linking in to the attack. They haven't got that threat at the moment so it blunts their attack somewhat.

Give over, Brown is by far and away the best English stand off in Super League. Always been under rated. Along with Gale at Cas the pair are the best half backs in this league. Mellor is an excellent player, still learning, and a great partner for Brown. That pairing is what is bringing out the best of average joes in that Widnes team.
If you haven't seen other top players kick a ball out on the full, then you really need to start watching games instead of reading reports.

Not just Tomkins but Williams and McIlorum missing from their spine too, the latter particularly so. Whilst it didn't effect the result against us last week you could really tell his absence for them.
I don't mean to take anything away from Widnes as they've played really well but their is an element of good fortune with them meeting teams at 'ideal' times - Leeds, Hudds, Wigan - far from their best or strongest in those fixtures.

| And Hull - never forget them and even Blackpool and York, thankfully the last two weren't recurring nightmares.
Widnes are adding to this year's comp as are the unlucky Salford - the only team to beat Widnes in 2016 IIRC. It would be great if like Castleford under Powell they can keep in there when injuries start to bite.
Hanbury used the same word as Tamou did after yesterday's NRL game without any apologies offered - why the difference?

| It's frankly bizarre that at 10pm on a Friday night Sky are apologising so profusely for the use of a very, very mild swear word.
At the same time on Sky Atlantic the F word was being used regularly.

Mcguire definitely, just happens to be injured at the minute.
Mellor and Brown are a good pairing, they compliment each other well. But I thought both were slightly off their game last night. The question with Mellor for me is when/if you reach the big games this year, will he still shine, remember Sneyd getting subbed off in the CC final the other year.

Completely agree. Kevin Brown is a joy to watch, the kind of half back the Sissies love (when they're their own). Plays the game in a dinner jacket and gets the best out of team mates. Good to see Widnes throwing the ball around and playing some good stuff.

Funny reading the Wigan board. Slated him to hell after the GF (and most of last year), then after he got MOM for England they were basking in a Wigan guy leading England to a series win.....after last night he's taking a beating again on their board.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no..... NO.
The vast majority of games against Wigan and Hull for long periods of time were nailed on. Leeds weren't expected to win therefore it wasn't as nightmarish and gut-wrenching to lose to them.
Widnes OTOH? Leeds were always seen as a chance as they beat Widnes often enough. Just not in some of the more important key fixtures. Crossbar job, ET's desperate chip straight into the hands of Thackray, nilled at Central Park, etc. Plus, Widnes were hard and dirty b******s with Sorensen, Tamati, Grima, Hulme and O'Neill Bros, Moriarty, etc, and even some of their backs were dirty sods. Eric Hughes and Mick George spring to mind. Lydon, Gregory and Offiah always appeared more tish playing in Widnes shirts IMO.
Widnes by plenty I'm afraid in the nightmare stakes.
