Regarding the often embarrassing and problematic South Stand, the planning application confirms the following:
- The current standing-only capacity is 7,000. This will be reduced to a more manageable 5,500 standing in the lower tier, with 2,200 seats in the upper tier
- The upper tier will include significant numbers of corporate seats with corporate-only facilities (no yobs)
- The terracing will have its own amenities befitting the class of customer in there. Those paying for a seat won't have to share facilities
- Both the new terrace and new seating areas will include segregated family-only areas
- The design allows for officials and stewards to quickly identify drunkenness, foul language and other anti-social behaviour. Fans will be evicted and have their season tickets suspended for breaching rules on behaviour and language
- The design allows for the terracing area to be converted to all-seating when the club feel the fanbase will allow for this
- Both the cricket club and football club have fallen short of funding targets. A value-engineered version of the South Stand will be considered before altering plans for the shared side, as will further downsizing of the proposed South Stand should local opposition force the height issue that's brewing. The terracing will be downsized before the seats
Not quite there yet, but almost on our way to having a respectable place to watch rugby. So much for those who think of the South Stand as some kind of "Kop" that has any kind of sentimental or cultural value, rather than a lump of concrete on which the dregs of society gather
Maybe this is why GH is happy with current situation, there won't be the capacity next year for a successful team and they will be announcing the reduced capacity in August (end of season) and urging supporters to get their season tickets quickly otherwise there may not be the availability.
